Warning: This article is about inflation, motherhood, economics, quantitative easing and responsibility. Stay with me. Be strong. Do not click over to the gossip sites. It’s important.
When was the last time you heard of someone running up all their credit cards and taking out huge loans to successfully get themselves out of a financial mess? Yeah, never. Oddly enough that is what our Federal Government is doing.
The Treasury’s own official debt numbers show that the 11th congress racked up more debt ( $3.22 Trillion) than all 110 congresses combined.
TARP, Bailouts, Stimulus… Where do all these trillions come from? They are primarily coming from loans from China and the government is making money out of thin air*. We used to call it “printing money’ but now it is referred to as “increasing the bank’s reserves”. Of course, when the banks start releasing the money into circulation, interest rates will spike and inflation begins. Until 1971, every dollar printed was literally represented by gold in vaults, but not any more, this means that money with no intrinsic value is produced.
The rules of Economics apply to Americans just like everywhere else on the planet. Governments in financial trouble have repeated the spend, pile on debt, print more money cycle through out history and the end result is not pretty. Our debt has been monetized by what has been euphemistically termed quantitative easing. (This cartoon explaining quantitative easing has almost 4 million views.)
Sovereign nations do not default on their debts. They inflate their currency to pay off the debts. The downside is monetizing the debt destroys the value of the currency over the long term and it is the citizens who are left to suffer. See Weimar, Germany 1923, Zimbabwe 2000, Argentina 2001.
Did you know that the monthly INTEREST PAYMENT on the national debt is as much or more than the Federal Government spends on programs in an entire year?
Many Americans do not understand that the Federal Government does not have a secret money stash and does not earn money. The government is simply a money filter…it takes money in taxes, keeps a portion to pay itself, and then sends out what it sees fit to whomever it wants. The political system of Republicans and Democratic candidates promising the world to get elected and then spends money we simply do not have. This is why, as a nation, we are broke. It’s time to educate ourselves and help turn this tide around.
You’ve heard about our country’s mounting debt, you wonder about national security and the economy but it all seems so confusing, very political and can be all too often mean spirited. MomThink can give you the information you need that is easy to understand, without political rhetoric.
What is MomThink?
From their website: “Momthink.org is a public awareness campaign dedicated to educating mothers about important issues that will impact their children today and in the future. It is a project of Intellectual Takeout, a non-profit, non-partisan think tank.”
Did you get that? It is not a Left vs. Right partisan group, this is a group dedicated to sharing the facts about something that in the past wasn’t exactly sexy or getting any headlines. Economics are important, and we have the responsibility as citizens, and as moms, to think about these issues. Thinkers are sexy.
I’m here to say learning about the problem of the massive debt that will harm our decedents is important! Information is power, and as Moms, we need to do what we can to protect our children’s future. We try to make sure our kids are healthy, we plan for their education, but why ignore a problem that (if the rules of economics and history are valid) could hinder their ability to have a standard of living that we ourselves enjoy?
What Issues Does MomThink Address?
The national debt is the first issue of potentially many that MomThink.org plans to bring to the forefront of mom’s minds. Momthink.org will identify and examine a variety of issues, from the economy to national security, that will directly affect the well-being of our children and grandchildren.
If you’re looking for more information about exactly what lies before us in terms of the burden from the national debt, you can learn more on their blog.
