There are lots of ways we can encourage a good atmosphere around the house. A few simple ideas to remember can provide a framework to follow:
- Eat dinner together, allowing time for conversation, with the television OFF.
- Enjoy family activities with the television OFF.
- Plan an activity with each child, just the two of you. As often as you can. Even if it is just running an errand together, a quick trip to get a treat, returning a library book – focused togetherness is the key.
- Read to your children, especially books you enjoyed at their age.
- Hug and tell each child how much you love them every day. Don’t forget your spouse.
- Playing board games and putting together puzzles provide children with valuable one-on-one time with parents.
- Time spent in prayer for our family, as well as time praying with our family, is time well spent. Church time is a great time for bonding.
- Discuss your childhood struggles with your children as they struggle with the same issues. Knowing you overcame the class bully, for example, can help them overcome one.
- Realize your home is more than material possessions. It is your loved ones that really make a home a home.
- Liberal and appropriate praise, with limited negative criticism, provides much needed encouragement. Always remember a positive attitude builds up everyone in the family.
- Family projects geared for everyone’s abilities can be fun and productive.
- Encourage children to discuss their worries and concerns with you.
Time spent together seems to be one of the main ways to raise successful children. The interest you invest in your children will provide them with the necessary ingredients that allow them to thrive as children and as adults.
