Thanksgiving is a celebration of gratitude and is a special time for family and friends. It’s all about being thankful for the blessings in our lives and can be a great time to share blessings with others. What a wonderful opportunity to teach our children about gratitude and generosity!
So in addition to overeating and watching football, try adding some of these to your family’s Thanksgiving tradition list.
5 Ways to Show Gratitude and Generosity
- Prepare and deliver a meal to someone in need. Your local church could help identify a recipient if you don’t know someone already.
- Prepare a care package for an overseas soldier. These men and women are often especially homesick during the holiday season. A care package is a sweet pick-me-up for them.
- Gather some of your old books that are in great condition and deliver them to a local children’s hospital.
- Sort through old toys for items that can be taken to Goodwill or Salvation Army.
- Make some Thanksgiving crafts (here’s a great list of ideas) to deliver to a senior center or veteran’s home.
Are there special ways your family incorporates gratitude and generosity in your Thanksgiving traditions?

Great ideas. You could also call your local Salvation Army and volunteer to ring at a kettle for an hour or two. If they don’t get volunteers, either they don’t have the kettle and don’t get the donations or have to hire someone which takes away from donations. Easy enough for kids to help with too.
