Sometimes simplicity is best…
I never intended to homeschool. But when my 1st-grader came home in near-tears every day after school because she was bored stiff I ran out of options. I decided to explore homeschooling. A quick search left me feeling completely overwhelmed. I had no idea where to begin. A dear friend of mine (a former homeschooler herself) then told me what has proven to be (so far) the best homeschooling advice ever.
Lucky for me, it’s not rocket science. And lucky for you, I’m about to let you in on it. (You may want to sit down for this.)
- Go to the library. Bring a large basket, bag or bucket. And your library card.
- Pull books off the shelves by the tens. Fiction, nonfiction and everything in between.
- Check them out.
- Go home.
- Read ‘em, Mable, read ‘em.
- Wash. Rinse. Repeat.
Congratulations, you have just homeschooled.
Seriously.

that’s what my mom did with me.
It helped that my dad was the librarian! By the time high school came around, we’d given up on using textbooks for anything except math and science–history, literature, English, etc, I got from reading.
Then when to a college with a Great Books program, and got an even better education from books.
More original texts, fewer textbooks!
