Your child’s teacher has been such a big part of your child’s life for 9 months and now the school year is ending. How do you say “thank you” appropriately, inexpensively and at the last moment?
- Regift a gift
- A basket filled with homemade baked goods
- A fruit basket
- A handmade piece of art from your child
- Gift card from a local store, Starbuck’s or Amazon
- A desk accessory for the next school year
- A lovely card with a heartfelt message can mean so much
- A box of stationary
It is such a feeling of accomplishment when our children succeed in school and a small expression of gratitude to teachers who help them so much is a nice way to put the school year behind us as we head into the summer months.

Thanks so much for posting this article. I was a teacher for 10 years and now I’m a mom with kids in school. A couple things I’d like to add:
*Some teachers have a “no homemade goods” policy due to allergies, cleanliness, or pranksters.
*Consumables are awesome. No one needs more “stuff!”
*Gift cards are awesome! Starbucks is great. Consider book stores, too, since lots of teachers end up buying lots of books for their own classrooms. Office supply stores are great too. Most teachers love office supplies. Amazon is always a nice fit.
*Consider the “special forces,” too…music teachers, band teachers, Special Ed and reading specialists, your favorite lunch lady, bus driver and the playground helpers, too.
A sincere thank you note beats all. I kept a file of positive notes to look through during rough days. They are worth their weight in gold!
Thanks for thanking your teachers.
I second the thank you note. I received a wonderful thank you note and appreciated it. I write all my kids teachers a note of thanks especially the “specials” teachers.
Please, do not give a handmade gift unless it’s consumable. Most teachers have children of their own and with limited space it’s hard enough to find room to store their own children’s gifts. Maybe a photo of them with their teacher or a scrapbook from the class with each child stating what they enjoyed the most about class that year.
