It’s never too early to start teaching kids safe driving skills.
I’m totally on board with the ‘It’s never too early’ plan! 3 years ago I read every single book in the parenting Love and Logic series. One of the best of the series is geared towards parents of teens. (I had a 9-year-old at the time.) I was especially impressed with the chapter on helping kids learn to be responsible and prepare to be teen drivers.
My favorite Love and Logic suggestion is to set up a clear rule that your teen cannot get a drivers license until they have saved enough money (of their own) to cover the insurance deductible. Another is allowing the kid to call up the family’s insurance company and discuss the increased costs associated with a teen driver. After they have discovered the difference in price, determine a percentage of that increase the teen will be responsible for covering. That could come in the form of a good grade discount or a safe driving course.
Completely in-line with my theory about teaching tweens early driving safety is a new drivers safety course. I was more than just a little intrigued when I learned about it.
Midas and the National Safety Council have teamed up to help parents make better drivers out of their teens. Yeah I typed that correctly. {Helping PARENTS make better drivers out of teens.}
The program is called: Alive at 25 . Normally this program would cost $25 to complete online. However right now, Midas is providing the course for free!
This program is not for the kid, it’s meant to teach the PARENTS.
The National Safety Council’s Alive at 25 online program:
- Outlines the risks young drivers face
- Helps parents take responsibility for reducing such risks
- Includes realistic situations to help teens think through options and outcomes before they encounter them in real life
- Helps parents reinforce basic driving and good-decision making skills
- Teaches skills and lessons through interactive media, workbook exercises, role playing and more
Did you know?
Driving crashes account for up to 44 percent of all teen deaths and are the leading cause of teenage deaths in the United States, according to recent studies by the National Safety Council.
I contacted a representative from Midas and asked them a few questions about this program. Here was one part of their reply.
“Midas feels that ‘Alive at 25’ is an important first step in helping parents instill their new drivers with good habits that will last a lifetime,” said Rick Dow, Midas Chief Marketing Officer. “The National Safety Council program provides parents with the information and tools they need to help their teens become safer, defensive drivers. We’re offering ‘Alive at 25’ for free on www.midas.com because we know that driving accidents are the number one killer of teens, and we believe this effort will help save lives.”
How about a little bonus? Upon successful completion of this course parents will receive an official National Safety Council Certificate of Completion and a free Midas Touchtm Maintenance Package.
