I can hardly believe that my son will be starting Kindergarten in less than a week. Where did the time go? While seasoned moms are used to this day and often look forward to it, rookie moms like myself are in a bit of a frenzy. Tears cloud my eyes every time I think about dropping him off, watch him try on his backpack or see the uncertainty in his eyes. Can’t I keep my baby at home for just a little longer?
While my world might seem to be ending, a whole new world will be opening to him full of fun, learning and new friends.
Our family is big on traditions and I wanted to make sure that we start the school year off on the right foot; that we begin new traditions that we will look forward to every year.
One thing we’re looking forward to is our Night Before School Party! I’ll be making a school bus cake to snack on and we’ll be snuggling up to read some great school themed books such as, The Night Before Kindergarten, A Place Called Kindergarten, The Kissing Hand and Look Out Kindergarten Here I Come! You can choose whatever books are appropriate for your child. We’ll also talk about some common safety precautions and we’ll address any concerns or questions my son might have.
If I lived closer to my family or had friends going through the same thing I’d definitely have a First Day of School Boo-Hoo Breakfast. Since I don’t, I intend to drown my sorrow with a hot cup of tea and a serious journaling session at our local Starbucks. Wish me luck!
For lots of other fun tips and traditions check out the Back-to-School Traditions post on my blog, A Purse Full of Cheerios.
