I’m trying to solve a dilemma. Every morning I dread getting out of bed. Not because I have to face another day. Not because I know I have to do the same tedious chores I did yesterday. I dread getting out of bed each morning because I know I need to prepare to do battle: the battle of what my daughters should wear today.
Every day is the same story: “No, don’t wear that, you’ll be too cold.” “No, you can’t wear that, you’ll be too hot.” “Please don’t wear that,…” it makes you look ugly. I don’t have much too show for my work as a mom. The house I worked so hard to clean yesterday is already a mess again. The dishes I washed are dirty again. The groceries I bought are gone. In my mind, I should at least be able to demonstrate my success as a mom by showing off my two well-dressed, perfectly combed and coordinated daughters. Isn’t that why every mom hopes for a girl?
I’m starting to realize that even this small sign of my adequacy is not worth the enormous battle I face each and every morning. I surrender. If you come to my house these days, you will most likely find one daughter wearing bright red socks with shorts and the other wearing her brilliantly striped fleece pants in the middle of a heat wave. At least two out of three of us will be happy…
Photo by me, proving that at least once, I won the battle of the wardrobe.

My girls are 7 & 11, I have learned that you can’t let these things bother you. I used to try so hard for my oldest to always match & look good. With my youngest, I realized we are all happier when she has some say in her clothes. She may look a bit goofy some days but she is happy & i’m happy.
With the house, when your kids are grown you can have a perfect house. Enjoy your kids now when they are young, it goes very quick!
Ah, well they looked cute for that day
Most days I let Ernie choose her clothes…which is how we end up at Costco in galoshes and tutus, but for the most part she’s learned pretty well when to wear pants and when to wear shorts, etc
I figure she can only get away with this while she’s young!
