When it comes to fictional stepparents, there’s a lot of examples of what NOT to do. Nearly every Disney stepmother comes complete with her very own wicked stepmother wart and many of the examples on television leave a bit to be desired (Carol Brady – she didn’t have to deal with child support, planning which house the kids would go to when, and the boys all called her “mom” and treated her just as though she was their biological mother). Somewhere between the wicked and the storybook perfect Brady family is probably where most of us fall.
I struggle to find examples of relatable stepmothers in movies. Julia Roberts in “Stepmom” was a decent example – because you could watch as she navigated what was definitely a rocky terrain in finding her place in the family and with her fiance’s children. I also adore, Bren, Allison Janney’s character in “Juno” – a bit rough around the edges, sometimes blunt, but you could tell that she had Juno’s best interest in mind always.
Who is your favorite movie/television stepparent?
