This past week has been full of news in single parenting. Huge on a mostly North American level was Ann Coulter’s appearance on The Today Show, during which she stated that “all societal problems can be traced back to single parents.” Also important to some was the news that some celebrities broke up, leaving newly single parents.
Why do I have a feeling that Sarah Jessica Parker’s apparent impending divorce from Matthew Broderick, or Angelina Jolie’s divorce from Billy Bob Thornton (soon after adopting her first son), had little to do with the decades of research Coulter claims supports her theory?
Why is it that a lesser known, Z-list citizen might be considered an enemy of the war on drugs; a celebrity able to hire maids, nannies, specialized child care and therapists, an image of success? It seems as though fame can erase your identity as single parent – rarely are six and seven-figure earners considered to have the same challenges as a mother earning less than $50,000 a year. Do single parents even notice these more-famous peers of their own?
I had to wonder, in the land of single parenting, is it your bankroll or your child-rearing role that makes you dangerous?

Umm.. another thing to add to my “why I can’t stand Ann Coulter” list. *sigh*
