From kindergarten, using pumpkins and apples, children are taught the life cycle of a fruit/plant. It’s like the coolest magic trick ever! So why not include them in your family garden?
It teaches them:
Responsibility – Have them ‘own’ some of it. My boys each have their own strawberry, cucumber and green bean plants.
Patience – Kids want instant gratification, but growing a garden teaches them to be consistently steady with a ready eye.
Healthy Competition – Typically kids want theirs to be the best, but with planting it usually works out about the same.
Pride – Kids get tickled pink when people go on and on about their veggies. And you’d be surprised what they’ll eat when it’s theirs.
If nothing else, they get to dig in dirt and play in water. Now that’s some summer fun!
