I have to say when Marley and Me by John Grogan came out, I was a little envious as I’m predominately a cat person, though I love dogs as well. You can imagine my excitement when Dewey: The Small-Town Library Cat Who Touched the World by Vicki Myron with Bret Witter was published. In case you haven’t read it yet, it’s been on the NY Bestseller’s list for 15 weeks at this point and is gaining popularity worldwide.

Dewey was put into a library book return on a freezing night in Spencer, IA. The next morning Vicki Myron, the library director, and another staff member found him. Dewey Readmore Books, as he was named, came to reside at the library for 18 years and became very popular with the residents of the small town and gained worldwide popularity with photographers coming from as far away as Japan.

The story intertwines Myron’s journey through life as a single mother on welfare and librarian and how she rose above the odds, with Dewey’s life and the impact he had on her and the residents of Spencer, IA.

From his antics of playing “hide and seek” and perfectly posing for pictures for a Japanese photography crew, to showing up at all the meetings held at the library and numerous adventures in between, “Dewey” is truly an inspiring and heartwarming book. Make sure you grab the kleenex for the last few chapters as they are rather emotionally charged.

The good news is that there is a movie of Dewey in the works with Meryl Streep playing Myron! There is also a children’s book that will be forthcoming of Dewey as this version of the book is not really geared toward children.

There are recent reports that Myron got a new kitten a couple weeks ago and named him “Page Turner” as she says that she’s turning over a new chapter in her life. The kitten looks like a baby Dewey except he has green eyes and a short tail. He was found like Dewey as a frozen stray and the library declined to adopt him, so Myron and her fiance adopted him.
