Dogs that counter surf can sure do some damage and there is nothing more frustrating than making a delicious sandwich only to have it snatched on the sly by a clever canine.
Here are some tips for fixing the counter surfing pooch.
- Address the problem in your presence. If your dog does this in front of you, use those moments to communicate with your dog that getting on the counters is unacceptable. As your dog goes to scale Mount Counter quickly correct him. A correction can be a tug on a leash, a spray of the spray bottle, or even a shake can. Whatever the correction is make sure that it is immediate and negative enough such that it acts as a deterrent for the behavior repeating itself in the future. Corrections do not need to be harsh but they should serve to change behavior.
- Engage in “K9 Entrapment.” Place some delectable doggy treats on the counter and leave your dog in the kitchen with them. Don’t go too far, though. Stay peaking from around the corner. Use mirrors, angles, or windows to be able to ‘trick’ your dog into thinking he has a straight shot at the goods but is really being spied on. The second he goes to jump on the counter quickly burst in the room and correct him for his attempted thievery.
- Bait the counters. When you leave the home set up some pots and pans to be perched just barely over the edge of the counter. As your dog jumps on the counter the idea is that he knocks them onto the floor and startles himself away from the counter. This can often spook a dog enough to not risk the counter surfing again.
Be consistent and good luck!
