If you’d like to spend some time with me, please stop by my blog rather than my home.
My blog is clean and argument-free (save one post on the husband and the remote control which painfully backfired).
And, apparently, I’m only funny on the blog. Someone actually told me, “I didn’t know you were funny until I read your blog.”
Um, thanks?
Anyways, I’d like you to believe I have perfectly-arched eyebrows and spend my days teaching Madeline long division since she mastered multiplication at 18 months old.
The truth? I’m typing this in my pajamas with yesterday’s mascara smudged under my eyes while Madeline literally runs circles in the living room.
Please tell me that is an intellectually stimulating exercise for her.
And not only do my eyebrows need a good waxing, but my upper lip probably needs it too. (Did I really just type that?)
Blogs are pretty and glossy. Life is messy.
It’s easy to believe my favorite bloggers live in spotless homes and mother perfectly while sipping Starbucks and reading their “subscription.” (Angie, I may or may not be talking about you.)
That’s when I have to remind myself that I wouldn’t read MckMama if she only talked about cleaning her dirty baseboards and surely, surely, she does have them.
On second thought, I probably would read it and, most likely, she would have fantastic photos to go with it.
So while I’m not going to stop reading blogs, I will remember how much I love my life, the messiness, the upper lip and all, because that’s what it is: my life.

The photos! OMG it’s the photos that lead us astray! Bloggers’ houses are always so CLEAN in their photos!
Whoever said you weren’t funny in person obviously didn’t spend much time with you.
I love it Katie! If only I could write like you when I grow up… maybe I should hire you to be my full time blogger. Your so good.
What a great post! I have that same imagine and thoughts too. You just wrote it way more eloquently than I could have.
So true. I am guilty of posting “clean” pictures of my house when there is a mess right outside of frame. I’ll take life, mess and all too.
Love it. I could not agree more. I nodded in agreement with Jen@ourdailybigtop. I’ve taken “clean” photos with a mess just outside the frame. Great post Katie
And once again I realize why I like you so very much!
So true. I once took a picture of my kitchen, and removed everything from my counter, wiped it down and snapped the shot. Then I put everything back and went back to life as normal, mess and all. That’s life. It’s messy, it’s fingerprints, it’s smudges and dust bunnies, and they’re all mine.
So there was this one time that I took some pictures of my house to post on facebook [shortly after we moved in]. I literally picked up the junk, threw it into the next room, took the picture and moved on—to the next room that I had just thrown the junk into, moved it again, and took another picture. And on, and on, and on. In the end, it looked like I had a clean house…but, I totally didn’t. Ahh, the magic.
Love the article! Life is messy…that’s hard to accept sometimes not only for myself but when I think of other people but it is. Also…totally agree with Jen…whoever didn’t think you were funny in person is CRAZY!
Madeline long division
Hey! You can start early anyway. The Internet is full of useful stuff. Like these long division worksheets for example
