Even though it is the middle of May, here in Chicago we are far, far, far from experiencing summer temperatures. I am starting to wonder if it will ever feel like summer around here! If it ever does warm up enough, my kids are looking forward to spending a lot of time at the Lake Michigan beach this summer. I love to give them the opportunity to play in the waves and the sand, but I have a hard time not worrying about safety for their skin.
Growing up, I don’t even remember wearing sunscreen. Now, my kids know that before they can even step out the door, they need a coating of sunscreen for their protection.
For swimming, I make sure that each child has a swimsuit with UV protection. I know the days are coming when my girls will want something more fashionable, but until that day, I am glad they are willing to wear the long sleeve rash guard shirts and shorts. I feel a lot better about them spending more time outside when they have protective swimwear on.
In hopes that they will actually wear them, I let each child pick out a hat for the summer. I figure if they pick it out themselves, they have a harder time arguing against wearing it.
One battle I struggle to win, however, is over wearing sunglasses. I want to protect their eyes from the harmful UV rays but none of them will keep their sunglasses on for any length of time. Does anyone have any suggestions?
I have been looking forward to the days when we don’t have to load everyone up with hats, scarves, mittens and boots. Now I have to remember that sunscreen is just as important as all that winter gear!
