Before cable television and computer games kids played outside everyday, all day long. Today parents worry about children just getting enough exercise to be healthy.
It’s time to remember those great games past generations grew up playing in the great outdoors:
Capture the Flag A fun game involving two team, a flag and the objective of capturing the flag and bringing it back to home territory.
Kick Ball Very similar to baseball; known as soccer-baseball in Canada
Red Rover Many remember this from the 1970s as a painful experience. It has been banned by some schools because of rough play. Fun game but needs supervision if mixed ages and sizes play.
Hide & Seek One of the oldest games children play but still a favorite with every generation.
Tag Simple playground game where the object is to touch the other players.
Red Light, Green Light Great game that children love. Develops quickness and children learn to pay close attention for cues.
Jump Rope Agility and physical strength are developed with this game; can be played with one or a group. Many variations exist.
Hopscotch A sidewalk or driveway and a piece of chalk are all necessary to have hours of fun for one or more.
These are a few of the many games we can encourage our children in that provide exercise and encourage friendships with other children. What better way for a child to spend an afternoon?
