This weekend I decided that it was time to unplug and spend some quality girls only time with my five year old daughter. As if a switch was flipped, my little baby has suddenly become this capable kid who loves a challenge and takes every opportunity to be helpful, so we decided it would be fun to take on a sewing project!
Now I have been known to sew a few things in my day, but my biggest challenge, honestly, is following instructions. I’m much more a “make it up as I go along” kind of crafter. This frustrates my daughter. She really does not have the patience or the understanding that it takes to wait and see what Mommy is going to come up with next. Instead of sewing from the hip, we chose to head over to You Can Make This, a great site with downloadable craft ideas and fabulous sewing projects. You literally just purchase the pattern, download the file, and print it out right there in your home! As you can see, we went with the Duet Apron patterns so that we could create beautiful mother/daughter aprons.
The trip to the fabric store was a blast! We enjoyed mixing and matching colors and prints until we came up with just the right combination. Once we got to work, each apron only took a couple of hours from start to finish. My daughter was able to help by cutting out the patterns and taping them together, working with the pins, and gluing on the finishing trim with fabric glue.
We had so much fun that we’ve already got our next project planned – his and her bucket hats. I can’t wait!
