Snow Day Activities for Your Family

Much of the country has been covered with snow recently, and if your school district is anything like ours they err on the side of caution with regards to school closures. In other words: we’ve had a lot so far. Though I’d far rather have my kids safe at home than on the slippery roads in a yellow school bus, it doesn’t take long in our house before cabin fever sets in.
Some of our favorite activities when we’re snowed in are:
- Baking. If you follow me on Twitter, you know I talk about cookies… A LOT. Baking on a cold day is a two-fold magical thing: it gives you something to do AND it makes your house warm and makes it smell good.
- Bundle up and go play. If weather allows, get those kids bundled in snowpants and parkas and let them stomp around in it. Snow angels are always fun, and my daughters are partial to throwing snowballs at the tree in our front yard.
- Crafts. I’m not very good at coming up with craft ideas, but you can easily make your own snowflakes to hang on your windows with just a pair of scissors and a piece of paper. Simply fold your paper in half three or four times (depending on the thickness of the paper) and randomly cut shapes in the paper. When you open it up – voila! – snowflakes.
- School work. Okay, this won’t be a popular answer for your kids, but the homework has to get done sometime, right? When there’s nothing better to do, it’s time to get that homework done.
- Watch a movie. Or four. Winter isn’t my favorite time of year, and there are times when the weather is so bad and we’re out of crafts and the cookies are cooling on the counter. Sometimes, nothing beats curling up on the couch with your kids and the latest kids’ flick.

My kids are still little (2 and 8 months), so our snow day activities are pretty much the same as every other day’s activities. With one exception: in December we had a bad snow storm that prevented my husband from going to work. We all spent the day baking (much to my 2 yr old’s delight) and it was so much fun. And with the help of my husband, so less stressful than baking alone with two kiddos in tow!
I think baking inside is a good idea. What is a better way to look out in the snow to the fresh scent of good pastries?
