I believe that space/privacy/boundary issues are essential, especially in a blended family. Every person should have their own space to go to. Also, I believe each person is entitled to privacy and maintaining boundaries. Everyone will have different boundary issues or privacy levels.
Space. Whether it is a bedroom or another room, each person in the family should have their own space. Somewhere where someone can go where they reflect and relax, without being disturbed by anyone. I think it is very important, since everyone needs alone time and time to wind down. Some people may need more time alone and others may need less time alone.
Privacy. Every person in the family should expect some level of privacy. Confidential/personal documents, such as a journal, should be personal. No one else should be looking through journals or any other documents/paperwork/notes that may be personal in nature. Everyone is entitled to private thoughts and feelings and should be free to write down same without having to worry that someone else in the family read their thoughts and feelings.
Boundaries. The issues above are a big part of boundaries, but there are also other factors when it comes to boundaries. One issue is when there is a disagreement/argument and one person needs space to cool off, the other person should respect that. Also, everyone should be allowed to have an opinion, as long as it is expressed in a respectful way. If someone doesn’t want to have a conversation, they should not be forced into having a conversation. Name calling, insults, negative connotations directed at any person should not be accepted or tolerated.
Of course, all the above would happen in a “perfect” blended family, and we all know, that there is no such thing! However, with discipline and everyone working together to have a pleasant home, with space, privacy and boundaries, I believe a blended family can achieve the above.
