I have realized (three kids into this) that I am missing a crucial mommy gene. I am sure (okay, hoping!) that you have moments when you too question if you are truly qualified for this work of motherhood.
My issue comes in the area of multi-tasking. I cannot do it. I am physically, mentally and emotionally incapable of doing more than one thing at a time. I can cook supper. I can take care of my kids. But I cannot do both of these tasks at the same time. The food will burn, and the kids will be fine. Or, the kids will be a fighting, screaming mass on the floor, and the food will be delicious. Take your pick.
I know that multi-tasking is what make mothers different from fathers. I know that most women claim to being a level higher than men is their ability to multi-task. This is why I know I am missing the mother gene.
What should I do? I’ve tried, and I don’t think this is something I can develop. My only hope is to keep this information from the kids. If they find out how much they can get away with when mom’s attention is elsewhere, I’m toast. Don’t let my secret out, okay?

I don’t multi-task either, but I have always claimed that I do it by choice. I’m too easy going to multi-task, or I like to focus on doing my very best on one project at a time. It’s crap. I am incapable of doing two things at once.
LOL. I’d like to meet the housewife that’s perfected this one! How about this – it isn’t multi-tasking if you can combine the two tasks. Kids helping make supper????
Wish I had words of wisdom to help, but at least I can empathize! I’m not a good multi-tasker either. I try to get as much dinner prep-work done ahead of time as possible. And use the crock-pot. I have a friend who sets aside one day a month to do all her cooking then freezes the meals. Then she just has to thaw dinner and throw it in the oven!
I can multi-task some things and not others. Cooking and caring for kids is one area I lack in. That’s when the television comes in handy. I am not a fan of allowing this to be the “babysitter”, but sometimes, something’s gotta give. Besides, it’s not that big a deal to allow the kids some down time, too.
I say this all the time! If I am forced to multitask, I can do two things shoddily. But I hate that, so one things always suffers tremendously. This is why I do not even answer the phone during the day. Wait, I live on the west coast so no one calls me at night. Why do I have a phone again? Oh, yeah, cuz I check email and facebook with it . . .
