Traveling abroad is likely to be an amazing experience for your kids. After all, they will probably be stepping into a new world, facing new cultures and very different people. Unfortunately, it is also likely to be extremely stressful for you as a parent if you are not properly prepared. Here are a few things you need to pay attention to while preparing for the trip.
1. Safety
What is the crime rate like where you are heading? What types of crime can you expect? The surroundings will determine how closely you will have to guard your children, and whether you may need to make special arrangements for traveling in the area.
2. Health conditions
Many of the lesser developed countries pose moderate health risks. Some do not have pure running water, so you will need to purchase drinking water all the time. Some do not have adequate sanitation, so you may be faced with exposure to bacteria in some areas. Some areas contain insects carrying diseases – like mosquitoes carrying Malaria. In the case of Malaria, it can be prevented by simply taking some medication for a set period before departure.
3. Child care
You may want some time alone, which will require proper child care. Some resorts may provide the service, while in other locations you may have to rely on members of the local community – is childcare easy to come by, or is there a language (or cultural) barrier?
4. Special needs
Many kids have special needs, including those suffering from asthma, or diabetes. Will you have access to medication where you are going? If not, you will have to ensure that you pack an adequate supply, and package it well enough to shield it from extreme temperatures.
5. The “to do” list
When preparing for travel abroad, there are a multitude of things that need to be attended to. These range from obtaining information on the local living and weather conditions, right up to passports, travel arrangements, clothing, etc.
Finally… when you are visiting crowded places like markets, remember to keep your children close. Many of these places are really crowded, and it is easy for a child to get lost. While gift shopping may be addictive (don’t get me started on national souvenirs like authentic Australian gifts, Russian or Chinese dolls, etc), the only thing that you should be thinking about is to keep an eye on your kid! Unfortunately, it is not like home, where the child can simply approach a police officer and offer an address – it is a totally foreign environment, with possible language barriers as well.
Traveling abroad with kids need not be stressful. True, there is a lot to do and take care of – but if you simply work at it systematically, you can keep it all under control. All it takes is some careful planning.
