Mazda Motor Corporation today announced the launch of its redesigned Mazda AZ-Wagon i, a special needs vehicle equipped with a sloping access ramp for wheelchairs. The new model is based on the fully redesigned AZ-Wagon micro-mini that was launched in Japan in September 2008. Sales commence today at all Mazda, Mazda Anfini, and Mazda Autozam dealerships throughout Japan.
The new AZ-Wagon i has a wide opening at the rear and a spacious cabin with a high roof. Other enhancements designed for wheelchair users include a new three-point seatbelt and a handrail on both sides of the rear cabin, as standard equipment. Additionally, user-friendliness is also improved for caregivers by a sloping entry/exit ramp that is gentler than the previous model.

Here’s the catch. Just like the base model, AZ-Wagon i will be only available to Japanese consumers, with no plans to bring it into overseas markets for the time being.
WHAT?
And to add insult to injury, autoevolution.com states, “To give you a glimpse into the i’s price tags, the standard model was priced between $8,700 and $14,000 in Japan, while the sportier model could be purchased for about $12,000.” So it would be completely and totally affordable, which is more than I can so for most things designed for special-needs use.
What do you think? Why can’t an American auto-manufacturer make a vehicle this affordable to those who need it here in our own back yards? How can we get this done? Opinions?

This is so annoying!!! We are still transferring our 100 lb, 13 yr old daughter into the front seat of our mini van and, I’m embarrassed to say, we take her fewer places than we should or used to. The state waivers used to help buy vans for people, now they only help you buy the lifts and you buy the van! That will not be happening anytime soon at our house. Budget cuts suck and I’m not sure what we are going to do in the future.
