Homework time can be a pretty stressful time for the whole family. Kids are often already tired from a full day of school. Parents are frustrated by the process. But with some planning, homework time can be maximized for kids and less stressful for everyone.
Establish and Maintain a Homework Routine
If you don’t have a set homework routine in place, you are going to be arguing with your kids over homework constantly. Decide what works best for your family and stick with it as much as possible. For many kids, homework time comes just after an after-school snack and must be completed before other fun activities can begin. Other children, however, need a break (and perhaps some physical activity) between school and homework.
Have a Set Place for Homework
If it takes the kids 15 minutes just to get situated to do their homework, they’ll already be frustrated before they even begin. Whether it be the kitchen table, a desk in your child’s room or the living room floor, find a place where homework can be done comfortably and without distraction. Have the necessary supplies available and adequate lighting.
Help Your Child Use a Planner
It doesn’t matter how organized you are with your homework space and time at home if the assignments aren’t being communicated clearly. Help your child learn to use some sort of planner to keep track of assignments. Be sure you know how the teacher communicates assignments/expectations. Encourage your child to get into the habit of writing down CLEAR instructions in his planner so you can help guide/check the homework he does.
Homework time doesn’t have to be a battle. Use these simple tips to maximize your child’s homework time, so your family will have more time and energy for other fun things!
