When I was seven days post-partum the birth of my daughter, my husband found me passed out on the bathroom floor. I had had an emergency C-section the week before and while in the hospital I had been given large amounts of NSAIDs and then discharged with a prescription for more.
Like a good patient I took my medicine as prescribed, but what neither I nor my doctor knew was that I had developed bleeding ulcers in my stomach. By the time my husband found me, I had six of them and had been bleeding internally for more than a day. But of course he didn’t know this. All he knew was his wife was unconscious and unresponsive on the bathroom floor.
Thankfully, my husband was a nurse trained in first aid and CPR and having just graduated from nursing school he knew what to do. He called 911 and then performed first aid while he frantically waited for the cavalry to show up.
Would you know what to do in a similar situation? Would your family? I know now only because I went through that experience, but sadly not only was I not prepared, but I would not have been able to respond if our roles had been reversed.
It is an easy thing to put off to another day. We think we will always have tomorrow to take care of things, to get prepared. But all too often we are caught unaware and unprepared.
I know something like this has happened to you or someone you know. Tell us your story of how first aid saved your life or the life of someone you know. Or tell us about a time you weren’t prepared. Leave a comment or write your own post and link it below and we will enter you in a giveaway to win the most advanced first aid kit available.

Oh wow. I direct a weekly homeschool group that has about 70 kids and 25 adults. My first aid training was about 15 years ago while in college. So, yeah, I’m rusty.
This one: TFAK Talking First Aid™ (ERS700) would be perfect – I’d probably keep it in my car so that it would be accessible either at the church when our group meets, or at home.
And now I need to see about getting my training updated…
I just posted it on Twitter!

I think the TFAK Talking First Aid kit would be most beneficial to our family.
Someone I know was saved as a child by the Heimlich Maneuver.
This post hit close to home for me. When my son was 2, he got mildly hurt and fainted in my arms. He wasn’t responding or breathing. I couldn’t get him to come to for several minutes (and you know how even that seems like time is standing still…). I started to perform rescue breathing on him because I knew that was what I was supposed to do. I couldn’t remember how to do it though, although I had been trained and certified in the past. It took a couple of tries, and eventually he did come to. Scary moment for me!
The most frustrating thing was that it came to a point where I needed to save my own child’s life, and I couldn’t remember what to do, and it was something that could have been completely in my control had I been trained recently!
Afterwards, I went and got re-certified in rescue breathing, CPR, and first aid. I also put together a certification training in my neighborhood to help other moms so they wouldn’t go through the same thing. I’m so glad I did because my son had recurring fainting and breath holding incidences for years. I now had the skills to learn how to cope and to help him.
You never think you may have to use it, but I now know it’s more important to be prepared! Thank you for the post and for helping to get word out!
I am lucky enough to say that I have never had a situation where I have had to worry about knowing something first aid. However, I really think I need to learn some things. I am a voice teacher who teaches students in my home and I think it would be good to know some basic first aid things in case anything ever happened.
I haven’t ever had to use this to save someone, thank goodness! My mother was an EMT and firefighter for 30 years and she has helped many people with her training. I love that huge talking first aid kit that’s $149.99. I would love to get this for my home. We have a 9-year-old daughter and I think it would be beneficial if she ever needed some help knowing what to do.
I am already a fan on Facebook!
A week and a half ago I ran a half marathon. A man finished just ahead of me and collapsed. When I got to him he had no pulse and was not breathing. I am a nurse, so I immediately called for help and started CPR. Another nurse came over, and started chest compressions while I performed mouth to mouth. Someone brought over an AED which shocked the man twice. Eventually his heart started beating and he started to breathe on his own. I am so happy to say that he is now at home with his wife and kids recovering from a traumatic experience. I have performed CPR hundreds of times, but always in the controlled environment of a hospital. This was my first time outside the hospital, and I am so grateful for my training. My instincts kicked in, and I knew exactly how to handle a very scary situation.
I used to run a home daycare and needed first aid classes for my liesence. I am glad I did for a few years later I had an issue with my own son who had gotton into some medication at my Grandmothers house and without the knowlage I had gained things might have turned out very bad
I would love to win this!
Probably the most useful kit for my family would be the Talking Safe at Home.
I would truly love this to help my family no what to do in a case of emergency.
The Talking Safe Traveler® would be great to have in the car. Those are the type of emergencies when someone is not available right away.
My family could use the Talking Safe At Home kit.
wow I could use this in my house not only do I take care of 83 year old mom with alzheimers I have 2 toddler grandsons here every weekend and this would be great for rides in car.
The “Home and Away Combo” would be perfect for us.
This kit appeals to me for my family: On the Job® Grand (ERS100)

The home and away combo is my favorite. Thanks for the chance.

Back when I was younger and was babysitting my brother he got hurt pretty bad. He had been at the neighbors house and he fell into a glass aquarium. He came back home and the cut was down to his bone. I couldn’t remember what store my parents went to and didn’t know what to do. I started panicking and got out a towel so he could apply pressure to it. My parents showed up and they brought him to the hospital.

Wow. This is definitely something I need to have on me at all times. We have multiple health problems in our family. It would be too long to list all the times I have been in need of something like this. From the time my mom had multiple blood clots in her lungs and I had to carry her to the car and then drive her to the ER when I was 14 to my son being attacked by bees, falling and needing stitches, and passing out due to a high fever. This is definitely something I need. I would get the TFAK Talking First Aid™ (ERS700) .

Now that my children are older and off to college, this would be wonderful for them to have. I remember the day I broke my ankle in the Target parking lot – freezing outside, and I started going into shock. My son, in middle school at the time had the task of getting help, calling 911 – fortunately the people at Target grabbed blankets to put on me before the ambulance got there. Very scary, would not want to deal with that again! I think everyone in the family should know the basics because you never know what will happen!

I love the Talking First Aid Kit but the Talking Safe at home would work for my family too.

I learned CPR several years ago but haven’t really brushed up on it, so I guess I’m a little ill-prepared in that area.

I think the Safe Traveler kit would be great for my family.
My youngest has 5 large scars on his head due to gaping wounds from one fall or another. I am now quite capable of handling a head wound, but in all honesty I’m scared to death that something else I DON’T know how to handle will come up next. What if it depends on me? Will I respond fast enough? What if I forget something crucial? And heaven forbid if something happens to me…will my children know what to do?
Time to do something about it.
My husband called me once at the grocery store and said, “You have to come home, S. ran into the counter and he’s going to need stitches.” My sister-in-law is a nurse and had told me that a new tube of super glue would save tons of trips to the ER. I just so happened to own a new tube of super glue. I psyched myself up all the way home, “Be a big girl. You can do this.”
When I got home, I super glued my son’s head shut.
Not exactly first aid to the rescue, but it was my bravest moment of First Aid thus far.
We went camping once and were not prepared with a first aid kit. My husband cut his finger pretty severly while chopping wood, and we had to call 911 and take him to the hospital. We ended up putting superglue over the cut, at the direction of the nurse to stop the bleeding. Who knew?
Thankfully, I have never been in a situation where I needed to know how to save someone’s life, but it is a thought that has often passed through my mind. I have considered many times that I should take a CPR course, but just as you said, I am always putting it off for another day. This kit would be a tremendously valuable thing to have. Thank you for the chance to win.
The Talking Safe Traveler® kit would be perfect for us.
I think the TFAK Talking First Aid™ (ERS700 would be best for us. There is nothing like an actual voice telling you what to do in an emergency.
I think the Talking Safe Traveler Kit would be most benefical to our family because we always seem to be going in the car somewhere.
My husband was attacked by a dog a few years ago. 30 stiches to his scalp in the Er in four different areas in the middle of the night saved him.
Love the Home And Away Combo Kit
The Home & Away Combo (ERS300CO) would be good for us! Thanks!
I’m a fan on facebook! Sheila H.
The talking first aid kit would really help me out alot.
I think the TFAK Talking First Aid would be the best for our family. Thi8s is such a helpful, wonderful product!
The TFAK Talking First Aid™ (ERS700) would be great for my accident prone family!
We would love to have the Home & Away combo. With 3 small kids you just never know what the next moment might bring. We’ve already visited the ER with our youngest twice this year plus we regularly travel in harsh winter conditions.
Thanks for this opportunity.
At my place of employment a customer was hit in the head and knocked unconscious, I had no idea what to do, fortunately the woman i worked with was a trained EMT. Thanks!
The safe traveler would be awesome for my family. Would be great to have akit in the car when we went camping in case anything happened.

well i never saved anyones life and no one has saved mine. But it would off been nice to know how to brace a broken arm when i broke it on my bike.
Whilst it’s never saved my life, I’ve had to use my training a few times to diagnose and deal with broken bones. I’ve broken my ankle 5 times now, so I know what to look for!
A few years ago I was at a neighbor’s children’s b-day party, and one of the kids there started choking on something. I had no idea what to do, and luckily her dad was right there and did a finger sweep and got the item lodged in her throat. Now that I have a baby, I’m terrified about something happening and me not knowing what to do. BTW..I’m glad you’re okay. Your story is frightening.
The Talking Safe Traveler would also be great for my family.

My scariest first aid experience was when hubby got a horrible cut while out on our boat. We were literally in the middle of nowhere, no cell service, nothing but my teeny little first aid kit (which was basically two bandaids and a couple of cleaning wipes). We ended up patching him up with duct tape and a beach towel. The talking first aid kit would’ve really been handy.
When my son was 2yrs. old he had a high fever and he had a seizure. He stopped breathing and luckily my mom knew rescue breathing because it would have taken the ambulance 15 to 20 minutes to get there. She gave him rescue breathing and after about 1-2 agonizing minutes he responded and we took him to the hospital. grndbaygal@gmail.com
Fortunately, I’ve never been in any near death situation, but we did have an accident we weren’t prepared for recently. We were walking and while the dog was playing he somehow got a puncture wound from a fairly large stick. We weren’t really sure what the best treatment was, if stiches were necessary, etc. We ended up having to go the the emergency vet just to be safe.
We could probably also benefit from the Basic Care Pack. It has all the basics.

When I was a young child, my grandfather started choking on a snack while we were all sitting around and watching television. He could not breath and fell face forward into the floor, it terrified me! Thankfully, my aunt was able to use the Heimlich maneuver and dislodge the obstruction.
I think this kit is great! Since becoming a mom, one of my biggest fears is that something might happen that might require first aid and that I wouldn’t know what to do.
This would be wonderful for me when I babysit. The only thing that I have been through is at the place I work they have a top door and bottom door on the bath room and the boy swung it right when I got up and hit me right in my head.
I would love the talking safe at home kit.
First Aid Saves Lives!
I would love the Talking Safe at Home for us. With 4 kids, it would be so handy.
Our grandmother stopped breathing and a nurse in the same restaurant was able to administer CPR.
My daughter was at my parent’s house while I was working. When I picked her up my dad and my daughter looked shaken up, she had JUST been choking on a piece of hard candy and my dad gave her the Heimlich! My father was trained in first aid to lead mountain hikes, and I was glad he was!
At work one of the girls cut her hand down to the bone with the scalpel. Since, we were trained to work on animals we did the same thing but for humans… Minus a scar she was fine….
I like the Home & Away Combo (ERS300CO)
Once at work a co-worker severely sliced her finger and a first aid kit was able to stop the bleeding and protect it until she got to the hospital.
