Twinkling lights and Christmas cookies. Hot Chocolate and Gingerbread. Decorations and Trees and a prettily wrapped gift beneath them for each member of your family. A someone to snuggle. A someone to share the story of a baby born in a manger so long ago. Will you have these things this Christmas?
Our families may not be financially wealthy, but most of us will have the things listed above. My children and I have been blessed by the love and generosity of others this Christmas season and by the overwhelming knowledge and power of God’s love.
The Blissfully Domestic family wants to share the love and generosity that we have with those who may not have these simple joys this year. And you can help. There are hundreds of ways to give this Christmas. What will you do?
Thanks to the generosity of Sears and their very versatile Gift Card, we were able to purchase $200 worth of Angel Tree gifts this year to give to those who would otherwise not have a Christmas this year.
The Sears Gift Card can be used at all Sears and Kmart stores. It can also be used at sears.com, kmart.com, and landsend.com They make a great gift and Sears is giving 2 Blissfully Domestic readers a $50 Gift Card to use however they wish.

I really like the idea of giving gifts of food to friends and family, and even those you may not know well yet (like neighbors). Even though I LOVE cookies and sweets, I think things like healthy muffins and breads will always be eaten and appreciated….and for some it can be extremely helpful during the tight times of holiday budget. It’s also a great way to show Christ’s love to neighbors you don’t know well yet!
There are a lot of people out of jobs this year that could use some extra help. That’s who our family is going to help this year.
I subscribe to your newsletter.
We want to try to find a family to buy gifts for that is really in need.
My brother has been out of a job for over a year now and not able to decorate for Christmas or even really celebrate much this year. I’d love to use this money to give him a few much needed items for Christmas and help him feel the love that we all have for him.
I was thinking about this today. It is chilly here, right now, so I thought it would be nice to get cheap fleece throw blankets (I seen at Walmart for $4.00) and give them to the homeless.
I clip a lot of coupons and shop the sales all year which enables me to get a lot of items for free or at rock-bottom prices. Each time I stock up on something I purposely set aside some of the items — whether it’s canned goods, shampoo, or toothpaste — and put them in a box. We give these items away as needs arise and whatever is left at the end of the year we donate to a shelter or needy family.
I have friends who are struggling this season with a family member who is very ill. A number of us have joined together to make sure their family is fed daily while they spend what could be their last days with their precious family member. Meals, grocery shopping, perhaps we’ll even cover some Christmas shopping for them.

A couple times in the past I’ve picked a child’s name off a Christmas tree and gotten them a gift. Walmart’s and Kmart’s in my area have the tree set up. I’d like to do something this year with my husband, like volunteering at church giving Christmas meals to the needy.

Money is so tight these days, it’s hard for many to squeeze an extra $5 for a new toy for the local toy drive. But, there is always people who need warm coats for the winter. Even if they aren’t new. My kids’ aren’t really rough on their coats, maybe because it’s too cold out to play much in them, so they are usually in really good shape every year. Donating them to a coat drive is a great way to give back.
Another way to give back without any impact to your check book: take your holey socks and turn them into fun softies for the kids at the local women’s and children’s shelter. We all have socks that we either toss or clean with when they get worn so bring a smile to a child’s face by making it a snuggly softie for them.

A group of friends and I have chosen a local family to support this Christmas. We will supply them with food and gifts…and prayers …..
I go for the totally practical gifts. Gift Certificates to stores that sell food are something that aren’t flashy or glamorous but you know they will be used and appreciated. SuperTarget and WalMart are two good stores to give G/Cs from.
We give through our church’s Christmas Catalog- it’s fun to pick out a gift and cause that connects with different people, and see where your money is going.

My family and I started a tradition several years ago, because none of us REALLY NEED anything ! Instead of buying gifts for the adults(the children still get presents) we buy diapers, formula , blankets etc. for the local womens/family shelter. We wrap them up just like a present, then deliver them to the shelter after Christmas. We all feel much better knowing our gifts are going to people who really will benefit.
I like to help out children through our church’s giving tree. Thanks for the chance.
I would love to give it to my uncle who has not been able to find a job for over a year now and is now living with my grandmother. He will not be able to buy gifts for his son or mom.
I already subscribe to the newsletter.
I have done/will do a few things this year:
Instead of sending Christmas cards to a huge list of people, I am donating to two charities in lieu of buying all those cards and stamps.
I am also helping at church where we host homeless families to live at our church the week of Christmas.
I am also wrapping gifts at my daughter’s elementary school where students in need (parents/teachers make the list). Other parents/staff buy gifts for these needy students so they get some gifts for the holidays.
I susbscribe to your newsletter with the email listed above for this entry!
We give food to our church to make baskets for people that the local school has determined could need our help. It’s a great way to show our kids how much we have.
My family has always ‘adopted’ another family to help through the holidays. Sometimes we’ve found them through an organized ‘Adopt-a-Family’ program; other times we’ve noticed a family in need, and collected items for them and left them for them (from Santa, of course!). However, something that occurred to us a few years ago was that there are plenty of food banks and other agencies that provide food for families who need it…but none (that we knew of) who provided pet food! Many families have dogs and cats (and other animals) for whom they may not be able to provide food. So please do consider donating a bag of dog or cat food with your holiday donations!

My daughter who is in college and I sponcered an 8 year girl through Job and Family services. We bought her clothes and toys from Santa. This was my daughter’s idea. I am very proud of her for being so giving. Thank You. I subscribe to your blog.
We always make a point to pick one family off the giving tree at school as well as donate to Toys for Tots.
We also make each child choose one gift, unopened to put in our charity closet that we donate in the spring to one of the churches auctions.
This is so wonderful. I love how the holidays always make people feel more giving and selfless. My hubby and I usually try to find someway we can help someone else during the holiday season. We feel so blessed that it would be a shame not to help someone else who may be less fortunate.
I volunteer for our local branch of the Salvation Army. We are contributing to and organizing the Angel Tree program and the holiday meals. I am chair of our fund raising committee for the women’s auxiliary and am always looking for new ways to raise more money for our charities.
Every year my children go through their gently used toys and we donate them to needy children for Christmas. Thank you!

I would love to Carol to the elderly or those who are lonely in the hospital
We like to do Angel Tree gifts for children who are the same age as ours and let our kids pick out the gifts to give them.
We usually invite the single airmen in my husbands unit over to celebrate christmas with us. It is a special time for my family to give back to those that can’t be with their families.
We donated to toys for tots and picked a couple of kids to buy gifts for from a gift tree. We don’t have kids yet, so we’re enjoying buying gifts for kids who might not get much this year, with the economy the way it has been.

We are among those who are struggling this year but we have still been able to help others. We buy food through a program called “Angel Food Ministries” that allows us to buy, once a month, a week’s worth of food for 4 for just $30. Sometimes it contains things that we just won’t eat so we donate those items to others who are struggling also. We are a very creative family so we also make things to give along with the food. One food/clothing item can make a person’s holiday so don’t think that you have to have a lot of money to help.
I subscribe to your newsletter and your fan page on Facebook.
I would love to take an angel from an Angel tree and purchase clothes, toys, and food for that child and family so they can have a wonderful Christmas.
My husband has been on unpaid leave of absence due to cancer this year, and we didn’t know if he’d be with us this year. We thank God he is, and in the name of the Christ child, we would share half of this gift with our friends, a mother and daughter who will be leaving their abusive husband and father. They will need help getting set up in their new place.
If I win the gift card I will donate it to a woman from a local unwed mothers home…merry christmas indeed
We participate in toys for tots… love that org!

Give clothes, new unopened makeup, toys, gitfcards etc. to Domestic Abuse Shelters. Holidays are often times when violence erupts in troubled homes and women and children may come to shelters with nothing but the clothing they are wearing.
Dropping bags of food of at a friend’s house that I know could really use it. I can do it when no one is around that way she doesn’t feel bad. We also let the kids each have $20 to go through the Samaritan’s Purse catalog to buy for needy people around the world. Of course we always donate to the food pantry.
I worked in a nursing home for years, I saw how many of the residents had no family come see them or bring them anything for the holidays. We like to go every year to some of the surrounding NursingHomes/Rehabs with gifts for all the residents.

Donate food to your local food bank and donate blood to the Red Cross is always a good time to give anytime of the year, but especially during the holiday season.

We go through the toy box in early November. Remind the kids that Christmas (and the birthday of one of them) is on the way. Ask what they are willing to part with for kids who may not have as much as they, and we will donate it to a local charity that has a toy “renewal” program. It’s amazing how generous children can be!
We participate in the adopt a family program with several other families we know. We get a list of the families wants and needs and provide a good Christmas.
I think a gift card or cash is a great idea for someone in need.
With the economy not being so great, I think that giving food to the food pantry and toys to different charities is a wonderful way to help someone in need. Also, for elderly people, with the weather getting cold, just asking if you can picked them up something from the store is also a great help. (We do this with a few of our elderly neighbors, whenever we go to the store.)
Thanks so much and Happy Holidays.

Ask your food pantry if they will accept putting out a box with new socks and gloves when the weather gets cold.
Your local dollar stores always have them in stock. So do the thrift stores. And they always have days when certain clothing on sale.
i always buy winter coats for children in need
I like to donate unused toiletries and cosmetics to women’s shelters around the holidays. I think a little frivolous treat could raise a woman’s spirits during what is surely a very difficult season.
Thanks!
I have already donated Thanksgiving and Christmas food items through Church and our local Open Door Mission. No one should go hungry!
Giving food to the shelters and Coats for Kids is always on our list.
We always get a couple angel names of the tree at our local store. In addition to the toys, I always make sure I get them a warm jacket and hat and gloves.
Every year I pick out presents for my friend’s 3 kids. I know they won’t have a lot under their tree, so I help out a little. I also like to get names off local giving trees where you pick a name and age and go get the kids presents!
Great giveaway!

I donate blood. Well, I do it as often as I can year round, but I make sure to donate in December. Blood Supplies are always short around the holidays and this way I know I’m giving the gift of life for the most tragic of stories.
I also make sure to donate toys/gift cards to local charities.
This year to give back, my family is giving candy-filled stocking out in a low income part of town. Last year (and this year, too) our church did a toy drive for these families. We noticed that they had no decorations up because they could afford it, so this year along with participating in the toy drive, we are passing out over 100 stockings for each person we visit, to give them a little start on decorating for Christmas.

Four years ago we started a new tradition in our family of collecting blankets, scarfs, gloves & hats all year long then we take them to the downtown mission on Christmas eve.
In previous years we have adopted a family, last year I organized a toy drive with a local church and my old employer. We were able to feed over 100 families and provided a toy for each child.
This year things are not so great and we will not be able to give financially . My Children signed up to ring bells for Salvation Army at the Mall this Friday and will will still need to figure out other ways to help.
We always donate to Toys For Tots and we pick three angels from an Angel Tree. One for each of our three boys.
It’s important this year to help as much as possible.
Very cool. It’s important to remember what Christmas is all about, we should all be focused on giving…that is what this holiday is all about!
Also, don’t forget about our troops and their families! The Wheat Food Council does a charity that helps you easily donate to the troops and their families, and it doesn’t take any money to help! Read this post: http://thepursuitofmommyness.com/?p=429
Give to your local foodbank. Most of them only need about $3 to feed one person a meal
I do a secret Santa program that helps over 50 kids for christmas but I also think if you cant afford to give for christmas you can still make the elderly have a much brighter christmas by gethering some children and going christmas caroling in your local nursing homes

Dropping off toys at a Toys for Tots dropoff is always a good way to give a child a good Christmas.
We do the Angel tree and drop off food at the local food bank.
we’re baking and giving grocery giftcards this year to help others.
We have a wonderful organization called The Joy Fund where I live. It is sponsored by the local newspaper and has been around for 75 years. One hundred percent of what you donate is used to buy toys for local families. All costs to run the program is paid for my the newspaper. Last year they provided toys for 27,000 local children. A great charity with a good cause.
Our school always takes a collection amongst the faculty for a local home for those with AIDS. This year, our home ec teacher got a donation of many yards of fleece. We decided to make each resident a tie blanket with the fabric. Along with the other items we collect, each patient will get a personally made, warm and cozy blanket.
We gave gifts to two children off of the Salvation Army’s Angel tree this year with the hopes that it will make their Christmas brighter. Thanks!
I usually am able to help a needy family, but not possible this year. I would like to have the pleasure of walking up to someone who appears to be trying to stretch their money, saying Merry Christmas, and handing them a gift card.
When you buy a toy, get something extra to put in the toys for tots box.
We donate to Toys for Tots and also an angle tree at our church.
We make shoe box Christmas gifts for the needy children served through the Appalachina Helping Hands clothes closet ministry! Thanks! senekers@comcast.net
Check at your local school and churches for families who have lost jobs and are struggling. Then donate to them

I work with mentally and physically handicapped kids. We’re collecting for the families in need.
Giving blood is useful year round.
I buy the cheap decorative bags at the dollar tree and fill them with fruit and snacks and give them to some of the children I know.
after getting new snow pants hats mittens boots all that jazz we took all our used no longer fitting ones to the kids school for classmates and other students who did not have them
We pick a name (or two or three) from the Giving Tree and set out to buy presents for these children while shopping for our own.

Thank you for the giveaway. There are so many things you can do to help someone in need this christmas.
1. Visit or call St. Jude and speak with someone in charge, ask if there is a family who needs a hand up this Christmas. If possible, take this family a bag of groceries and a gift.
2. Take a look around your neighborhood, look hard! If you do, you might see a family having a hard time but, not speaking out about it or asking for help. You can leave a bag of groceries on the porch if you don’t want them to know who you are, it could really brighten their day.
I plan on taking my grandchildren shopping for a family in need. The mother is single and has a baby in diapers and also a 9 year old boy who is recovering from a brain tumor.
Every year I join my church group to go caroling and to deliver fruit/food/gift baskets to elderly and disabled shut-ins in our community, and this year I also would like to volunteer with Wheels on Meals to deliver Christmas dinners as well. Thanks for hosting such a generous and good-spirited giveaway!
There are many ways to help those who aren’t so fortunate. Local fire departments and police departments usually need donations to give gifts to children. A donation to a food pantry would help a family have a hot meal.
Also, for those who love animals, the animal shelters are usually very appreciative of help as most are in dire need of supplies (blankets, food, etc).
Those who don’t have money to spare can spread some cheer by visiting elderly neighbors or local senior citizen’s centers. A smile and a hello make a big difference

My children and I are helping with Blue Santa this year
Donating your time and extra canned goods or items to a food pantry is a great gift this Christmas.
you could give to the food bank or toys for tots
Lots of organizations have “angel trees” where you can pick an angel off the tree (the angel contains the sex, age and items looking for) and you buy a gift for the recipient who otherwise would not get one. I know our pediatricians office does one for the local homeless shelter children.
We are helping out a hardworking single mom and her family this year- this would be an extra blessing for them as they struggle for just the necessities.
We also always buy extra groceries to our foodbank and put whatever dollars we have into the Salvation Army buckets so they can make sure the people who need, have.
The girls buy extra for toys for tots, and last but not least, we take food to the humane society.
You can mail grocery store gift cards to needy friends without them knowing you were the one that sent them. I’ve done that before.
Take some toys by the local children’s hospital. Some children don’t get to be home for Christmas.
We always give to the Salvation Army & donate to our local food pantry. The need is great in our community.

Both myself and my husband plan on giving our change jars that we have been filling all year to 2 different people that we feel are in need.
We donate food and clothes to shelters and charity.
Donating food to the local food pantry.
At our church we have a Christmas giving tree. Everyone takes an ornament with the age, gender and need of a child written on it. We buy gifts for needy families this way, so each child has some nice Christmas gifts under the tree on Christmas morning.
every year we leave an envelope with cash in a random house.
We try to help those who aren’t quite as blessed as we are. This is a lesson my grandchildren are learning, and the gift card will certainly help us do it.
We really enjoy “adopting” a family in need every year. We pick out toys for the children, household goods and a gift card for a holiday meal.
you know mine are not grand, but look through your closet and get out clothes- coats, shirts, pants, boots and blankets that you can take to a shelter and give to those who are cold- do not forget mittens and scarves.
Take over some coffee to the shelter, tea bags and cocoa too.
Little things like soaps and shampoos they appreciate too.
I know the little things mean so much and karma comes back
I did not know my neighbor was having hard times till I was moving last week and took gc and bought them food and took toys I had and told her- they can be from you or santa. I may be having hard times and dealing with alot but if I can do something for someone else- even if its giving a pile of coupons to use that is something.
You know doing for others usually only hits people during the holidays – and wish people would remember there is a need year round, and many do not admit they need help for pride but pay attention and don’t make your neighbors feel like they should be embarrassed. I had neighbors who were elderly and when I cooked a hot meal I would take some over to them saying I had extra so they would have a hot meal too because when you are alone, sometimes its easier to just eat a bowl of cereal ora cold sandwich.
I may not be blessed with money but I have a roof over my head for now and have gotten out of a rough relationship and know God will provide and guide me where he wants me in life.
We always do a few things: (1) my kids have to go through their toys and pick out stuff to donate so they have room for what Santa brings this year. I do this in October so I am sure it can get to other kids in time for Christmas; and (2) we contribute to the “adopt a family” through my husband’s work. Thanks!
I plan to donate groceries and my time at the local food bank.
At this time of year, we volunteer more often at the Food Bank. I had never realized before that those kids with the free and reduced lunches at school go without food when there’s no school! So it’s not just strangers in the rural areas that we’re helping – it’s kids we actually KNOW!

We got an angel from the Angel Tree at my husband’s work.

Visit a soup kitchen to help out, and also take the time to sit down and connect with some of the guests.
We always donate to Toys for Tots, but we also give money to Salvation Army and the Red Cross. It may not be a lot, but we always want to help in any way we can.
We make homemade holiday cards for the homeless shelter. Before we have our holiday meal, we go share theirs. To see the looks on their faces getting a holiday card, but a homemade holiday card with a child’s touch serves as a reminder that sometimes it is really the little things that mean so very much.
We also invite those that are alone during the holiday to our home to share our meal with us. New Orleans has many that have come to volunteer to rebuild the city, but cannot afford to be home for the holidays.

I donate at food drives.
At work there had been a woman who was recovering from a series of cancer-related operations. Her boss let people know that she was collecting food to drop off at her house. I went shopping the night before and bought a bunch of stuff – everything from junk food, soda, to more nutritious pasta, cereal and spaghetti meat sauce. Although I wasn’t the one who dropped off all the food, the woman who received it, let everyone who had contributed know how much she had appreciated it. Tough enough being home from hospital without being forced to do all the normal activities associated with running the household.

We always give to the Salvation Army and Purple Heart!
While giving during the holidays is important, we must remember that people are hungry and in need of help year round. Food pantries nationwide can use donations any time, this year more than ever. When the holidays are over, find a way to contribute again.
We usually give to the Salvation Army and participate in as many food drives as we can! I wish we could do more!
Our local food bank does a wonderful job with providing food to those in need. We give them money and they use it to help families.
We also give food at our local grocery store so they can do the same.
We send packages of “stuff” to the troops, and usually include things they can give away to local kids, like small stuffed animals.
Meijer has food donation cards you can buy for local food banks
Just bake up something extra we have to eat anyway just add a few more extra ingredients and place in dish and bring to those in need
We go to wrap presents at the Salvation Army with my grandchildren as it is so much fun and they really enjoy doing it!
I always give an unwrapped toy to my local grocery store who collects them for less fortunate children.
My family and I both donate and volunteer at our local chapter of The Salvation Army!
We also buy new toys and winter coats for children and drop them off at Wal-Mart’s ‘donations for the holidays’ drop-box!

A good gift for someone in need would be to cook for them!
Every year my kids and I pick a family in our community that we know needs a “little help”. We make a basket with food for Christmas dinner – including a little turkey or ham (whatever we can afford) and we also add a few stockings filled with candy and fruit. We deliver it on Christmas Eve dressed in an old Santa suit that has been in my family for years. It brings such holiday cheer into our hearts. I wish we could do it for more than one family.
I go to an event call alternative christmas
I will use it to buy for items on the angel tree in our local mall. That very same organization helped my family when I was a child have a merry Christmas so i want to give back!

I have already sent quite a few gifts to my friend this year. Her family has had a difficult financial time this year after she is still recovering from breast cancer surgery and her husband just had a 5 bypass surgery.
At my work we adopt a family.
We donate to a local charity called the breathing room, which provides gifts to children whose parents are suffering from cancer and other chronic debilitating diseases.
We give what we can to the Salvation Army and Toys for Tots. We also try to give to the local food bank when they come for pickups.

This year instead of exchanging presents with our family and friends we spent our Christmas money on a donation of clothing and toys for the East Valley Child Crisis Center. We chose this charity in honor of my Aunt, Barbara Sue Miller, who passed away in August 1998. She was such a giving woman who always had more than enough love and cheer to give to others and we wanted to give a gift in her honor that would reflect her love of children.

there are always kids in the homeles shelter, some toys are always welcome
Would be nice to win!
I work at a nursing home that specializes in mental illness, and a lot of the residents there have been abandoned by their families and loved ones. So for the Holidays, I like to treat them to something special by bringing in some food and gifts.
Giving does not always have to be tangible, I think one way to really give during the holiday season is to volunteer. Go to the local food shelter, the domestic violence shelter, the boys home, the detention center for teens, etc., and find a way to give your time and caring to someone in need. If you just look a little, the opportunities are there aplenty and then some!
Through my church we give to a Battered womens Shelter.

We have always taught our kids to always give to the Salvation Army & volunteer as a bell ringer atleast once a year but this year is different because this year I am the out of work person so we can’t give but we can still ring bells.
I give when I see the salvation army outside of stores, we donate to when the schools do food drives, and I buy a toy and leave it with the food store that collects them in my town. Thanks!

One year we donated all our unused winter stuff (coats, gloves, hats) to a local church and another year we had a food drive that went to the local food bank. This year we plan on sending some stuff to our troops. Happy Holidays Everyone.

Choose a needy family from church, or from your child’s school. It’s a great way to give back. Thanks
I bake cookies for my local shelter every year. I think I will make gingerbread cookies this year!

There are many organizations and churches that are looking for gifts and food for needy families this Christmas. Homeless shelters often put together boxes of toiletries for men, women & children. There are drives to collect old coats and shoes (in good condition of course) to provide to people without one. If you have no money, you can give your time to help prepare and serve food at a shelter on Christmas Day.
I think a great idea is to carry around coats or blankets in you car to give out instead of money to the homeless. I gave a homeless lady a coat a few weeks ago and she was thrilled. They really need that this time of year.

Get a tag from a giving tree and give a stranger in need a Christmas gift. I got some legos for a nine year old boy this year.

I have started a writing group that meets once a week in my home. I encourage young writers to pursue their dreams, and support their passion for the written word.
I give to my community by donating to my church benevolent fund. Every Christmas the church looks for people in need and gives them a gift of money.
