I had the opportunity to take my family to a WNBA Tulsa Shock basketball game. WNBA is the Women’s National Basketball Association and is the highest level of professional basketball for women in the United States. I am familiar with the WNBA because one of the historically most famous players, Crystal Robinson, went to school at my college.
My husband is a huge basketball fan so when we were invited to go we jumped at the chance! I have to admit – at first I went mostly for him. But I was pleasantly surprised at how much fun we had as a family during the game.
My children were younger and I worried how they would do during the game but they enjoying cheering for the team, watching the mascot and even got a few gifts given to them as we came in. Livestrong bracelets and little basketballs are the favorites.
I appreciated the opportunity for my daughter to see strong women. Active and healthy. Many of them mothers. I think positive female role-models are vitally important to our children – but especially to our girls.
After the game we stood in line for our autographs and I asked the kids what they thought of the game. My son said, “Oh! This was the Mom’s turn to play. Cool!” because in our home my husband is the one who enjoys playing basketball. They also liked the mascot’s interaction with the fans, and seeing the crowd on the big screen.
The ticket prices are extremely reasonable for a professional sporting event and the game was not only entertaining, but there were lots of activities, contests and giveaways to keep the kids busy as well. If you’re looking for a family-friendly activity on a tight budget, consider attending a WNBA game in your local area.
I even have a discount code for you to get in for less!
