“Coming together is a beginning; keeping together is progress; working together is success.” – Henry Ford
Forming a working relationship with your child’s educational resource team.
Some parents decide to home school their children, especially those with special needs. Others choose specialized schools, while many others opt for public schools. No matter what educational system you choose for your child, you will be working with a team of people. As the parent, you know your child best; and working with others who don’t know your child as well can be frustrating.
As a teacher, I have been in many collaboration and planning meetings. Most have been very productive and beneficial, but there have been a few times when emotions ran high and we actually digressed. Here are some of my tips for having a positive meeting with your child’s team:
- Be Prepared: Bring a paper and pen. Have doctors’ evaluations on hand. Bring anything to help the team “see” your child.
- Make a List: Jot down questions and concerns ahead of time and bring it with you. This will prevent you from forgetting to ask something.
- Be Specific: Honesty and clarity are keys to helping others understand your child.
- Advocate: You are the one who has been to the doctors, seen the behaviors, and felt your child’s struggles.
- Be polite: Every member of the team wants the best for your child. Try to avoid finger pointing and the blame game. Be positive and open to new ideas.
