Robin Lim, an American midwife and author, was honored Sunday evening with the CNN Heroes award for her extensive work helping thousands of poor Indonesian women have a healthy pregnancy and birth.
Lim offers prenatal care, birthing services and medical aid through her health clinics. In the developing world, many women don’t have access to contraception, nor do they have access to prenatal care.
Robin Lim’s video tribute during Sunday’s award ceremony was announced by Christy Turlington Burns, founder of Every Mother Counts and supporter of prenatal care worldwide.
Upon accepting the award, a tearful Lim said, “Today on our Earth, 981 mothers in the prime of their life will die — and tomorrow again and yesterday,” she said. “And I’m asking you to help change that. We don’t even know how many babies are lost, but all of us can help change that.”
