4th of July Tissue Paper Craft for Kids

Fourth of July Tissue Paper Flag - Brilliant Independence Day craft for the kids!
When I think of Summer, I think of all things red, white, and blue. With the 4th of July coming up I thought it would be great to make some decorations for the house that are perfect for the patriotic Summer holiday!

Today, I bring you a fun and easy craft that can keep kids of all ages entertained for quite some time. Surprisingly, it held the attention of my 5 and 7 year old kids, as well as my 12 year old son. With only a few supplies you will have a piece of art that can hang anywhere in your home that needs a touch of patriotism.

DIY Kids Craft Paper Flag Supplies

First, gather your supplies. You’ll need:

  • white school glue
  • red, white, and blue tissue paper {cut in to 3×3 inch squares}
  • scissors
  • white cardboard
  • a ruler
  • a pencil

Next, make your template. You could eyeball it as you go along, but since I was doing this with the younger kids, I wanted to give them a guide for where each color tissue paper went.

Finally, start twisting and gluing your tissue papers to the cardboard.

Each flag will look different depending on the child’s way of twisting the tissue paper. Also, the fullness of the flag will differ by artist. My kid’s flags still showed a lot of the white cardboard. My flag, the first picture in this post, is very full. I added lots and lots of tissue paper in each section of my flag.

My daughter did a “bow twist”, while my son took more of a “smoosh the paper” approach. That’s the beauty of art. No one piece is ever the same.

Just keep gluing and twisting and adding tissue paper until you’re completely satisfied with your flag. When you’re finished, you can hang your American Flag above the mantel, in the dining room or in the kitchen. It’s going to look great wherever you choose!
