Memorial Day Weekend. It’s the official kick-off to Summer activities (even though in Florida its felt like summer for weeks!) and to me one of the first things I think of when I think summer is food.

BBQs, picnics at the lake, snacks at the beach; we all love the fresh foods and the being outdoors time that summer brings.

When you are putting together a menu and a shopping list, do you think about where those ingredients are coming from? When you live in the Northeast and you need a watermelon in May, it’s not coming from a local farm. What about if you need corn or tomatoes? To procure those items, you need produce coming from a place with a head start on the growing season – Florida.

Florida’s great weather means longer growing season and an ability to have produce that the most northern states won’t see for months.  Floridians benefit from the availability of fruits and veggies that are right off the farm and at the peak of freshness.

I was actually surprised to find out that Florida is a major producer of corn, tomatoes, watermelons, and blueberries. Of course, I always think of the Sunshine State for citrus, but not sweet corn.

Right now is the perfect time for produce from Florida at your table. Plus it’s easy to make it a combo with seafood from Florida. The Fresh From Florida and Florida Department of Agriculture have your fabulous recipes and entertaining in mind. This means when you are shopping in Florida – it’s local farms producing tomatoes, corn, blueberries, watermelon and more!

It’s almost June and in addition to the produce I mentioned, Florida farmers are harvesting carrots, bell peppers, cucumbers, celery, eggplants, and mushrooms! There is a terrific grid on the Florida Department of Agriculture site that shows seasonal availability and harvesting for produce grown in Florida. Buying fruits and veggies in season is a great way to have the freshest choices! PLUS you support local farmers.

I’m putting together a Memorial Day menu that will include a watermelon salad, bacon wrapped grilled corn and a blueberry crumble. These crowd pleasers are right in season and will come from my local farmers market.

Also don’t forget the Florida Seafood – farmed in Florida, May is the start of shrimp season and you’ll find that in season through the end of the year along with clams, flounder, alligator, oysters, tilapia and more!

Florida is producing everything you need for summer (and year-round) menu planning. Check it out at your grocery store or local farmer’s market!
