Rainbow cupcakes, rainbow cookies, even rainbow pancakes yes, pancakes, are all the rage these days. I used the same technique to make red, white, and blue cookies for a 4th of July picnic.
Why spend extra money to buy them when it’s so easy and cheap to make them yourself?
How to Make Red, White, and Blue Cookies
You will need:
White sugar cookie dough*
Red and blue food coloring**
*I made sugar cookie dough from scratch with egg whites instead of a whole egg to make sure my dough is white. You can use your favorite box mix or prepared cookie dough if you like. It’s OK I won’t tell.
**There are natural food colorings out there but they are spendy! Use whichever you like.
1. Split the dough into three equal parts.
2. Leave one bowl of dough plain (white.) Add a few drops of red food coloring to one bowl of dough and a few drops of blue food coloring to the last bowl of dough. I ran out of blue, which is why it looks a little anemic.
3. On a floured surface, roll each colored dough ball into a tube shape.
4. Stack the red, white, and blue dough tubes together.
5. Slice the large dough tube with a knife.
6. Roll the dough into a ball so the colors mix.
7. Place the dough ball on a cookie sheet or baking stone and flatten it into a cookie shape.
8. Bake the dough according to your recipe/directions.
9. Remove the cookies from the oven and cool on a wire rack.
10. Be patriotic – chow down on red, white, and blue cookies on the Fourth of July!
