Hurricane Season is in full swing; and earthquakes and tornadoes, well those don’t follow a seasonal calendar.
We have a 3 part series on Natural Disaster Preparedness, but I thought it would be a good idea to share some Natural Disaster preparedness tips specifically relating to the kitchen.
Two Week Supply of Non Perishable Foods
- canned tuna, canned chicken
- jars/cans of fruit
- canned veggies
- powdered/evaporated milk
- bottled water
- instant coffee/tea
- pet food
When The Storm is Nearing
Stock up on
- more bottled water
- batteries
- cereals
- granola bars
- fruit – fresh and dried
- unsalted nuts
- dried, smoked meats that need no refrigeration
- crackers
- jarred baby food works for adults and children, alike
Non-Food Natural Disaster Kitchen Supplies
- batteries
- can openers
- clean containers for drinking water – if it must be collected and boiled
- Freezer Bags, gallon sized. The day before the storm is to arrive – fill and freeze as many as you can. These have so many uses
- Generator (if you can)
- Gas cans – keep these filled
- Tools – hammers, nails, screws, screw drivers, wrenches
- Flashlights
- Batteries (what, you’ve noticed I’ve repeated this?)
This is by no means a complete list, it’s just a starting point – a jumping off point, however if you live anywhere near a cone of uncertainty for Hurricanes, Tornado Alley or Earthquake prone areas – you’re probably well versed in the pantry stores for National Disaster Stocking.
Here’s a post for additional ideas on recipes and foods you can prepare without turning on an oven.
