Also known as “Fat Tuesday,” among other names in varying cultures, Mardi Gras marks a time of indulgence and celebration before the season of Lent is signaled by Ash Wednesday. In some cultures, the revelry lasts for days and even weeks, and while the menu changes based on your locale, the recurring theme is the same: rich, succulent, carbalicious delights.
Traditional Foods
If you are wondering whether a food fits on a Mardi Gras or “Carnival” menu, check the fat and calories. Jaw drop and eyes widen? Good. It’s a go. Pastries and cakes, rich meats and sausages, dairy products and bread products and – did I mention the meat? Lent often includes a time of fasting from meat, so now is the time to eat up. In fact, the Czech Republic calls their festival “Farewell to Meat.” Here in the states, Mardis Gras is most closely associated with Louisiana and its amazing Cajun Cuisine.
For every good meat dish, there is an even better side dish, though, and you’ve got to have some snacks between all those parties. Enjoy this roundup of great Mardis Gras snacks and side dishes for your pre-Lenten feast, and don’t forget to comment with your favorites!
