Day of the Dead Bread

Halloween has come and gone and now we have Dia de Los Muertos to celebrate. This traditionally Mexican Holiday is filled with beautiful bright colors and lots of good food. It’s a day where we can honor our dead by keeping them in our thoughts but also by baking them bread!
PAN DE MUERTOS/DAY OF THE DEAD BREAD
- 1/4 cup milk
- 1/4 cup butter
- 1/4 cup sugar
- 1/2 tsp salt
- 1 package active dry yeast
- 1/4 cup very warm water
- 2 eggs
- 3 cups all purpose flour
- 1 tablespoon anise seed
- 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- Bring milk to boil and remove from heat.
- Stir in butter, 1/4 cup sugar and salt
- In a large bowl, mix yeast with warm water until it is completely dissolved. Let stand for 5 minutes
- Add the milk mixture to the yeast mixture
- Separate the yolk and white of one egg.
- Add The yolk to the yeast mixture but save the white for later.
- In a bowl, mix anise seed, cinnamon and 2 teaspoon sugar. Add to the mixture
- Now add flour to the yeast and egg. Mix well until dough is formed
- Knead dough until smooth. Return to large bowl and cover with dish towel.
- Let rise in a warm place for an hour and a half.
- Meanwhile, grease a baking sheet and preheat the oven to 350 degrees
- Knead dough again on a floured surface.
- Now divide the dough into fourths.and shape them into skulls.
- beat egg whites lightly and bush the top of the bread with it.
- Bake at 350 for 30 minutes
For an orange glaze mix orange juice with powdered sugar and orange zest. Make sure the consistency is still pretty runny. Pour on individual slices and serve warm!
