My dad grew up on a farm…his mom was an amazing baker and cook. Unfortunately, I never tasted any of her creations but, I do have some of her recipes recorded in a cookbook of my mom’s.
Grandma’s Harvest Apple Pie
- 6 cups thinly sliced apples {I used Empire apples-you can choose tart or sweet or a mixture of both}
- 3/4 cup sugar
- 1/4 cup flour
- 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- dash of salt
- 2 {or more} tablespoons butter
- Pastry for a two-crust pie
1. Heat oven to 425°.
2. Mix sugar, flour, cinnamon and salt.
3. Stir apples into sugar mixture.
4. Turn apples into pastry lined pie plate.
5. Place pats of butter on top of apple mixture.
6. Cover with top crust that has slits in it {I placed my son’s initial and some “balloon” shapes in the crust~it’s a birthday pie}, seal and flute. {I am TERRIBLE at the fluting}.
7. Cover edge with a strip of aluminum foil to prevent burning and remove for last 15 minutes of baking.
8. Bake until crust is golden brown and juice bubbles through the slits in the crust…about 40 to 50 minutes.
hugs, mb
