Making homemade bread doesn’t have to be difficult and scary. If you’ve ever dreamed of having a house that smells like a bakery, this recipe will help you to achieve that.
This would make great Christmas Gifts!
Makes 5 medium loaves.
- 6 Cups Warm Water
- 2 Tablespoons Yeast
Mix well and add:
- 2/3 cup Honey
- 2/3 cup Oil
- 1 tablespoon Salt
- 8 cups Wheat Flour
- Mix well and let rise until it doubles in size.
- Stir down and add flour till right consistency for kneading.
- Knead for 20 minutes by hand, or 10 minutes by machine.
- Let rise again until it has doubled in size.
- Punch down and shape into 5 loaves.
- Place in buttered metal pans.
- Let rise then bake at 350 degrees for 30-35 minutes.
Tip: after dividing dough into 5 roll each one out into a long, narrow rectangle, then roll tightly and pinch ends together. Place ‘roll’ in pan. This eliminates most large air pockets.
Variation: Use only 4 cups of wheat flour and use white flour to bring the dough to the right consistency. This will make a lighter, fluffier bread.

I’ve always wanted to bake bread. This recipe gives me the encourage to give it a try.
Rona, I’m glad you’re inspired! If you want, you can always half the recipe and start off small. Bread is one of those things you have to get the hang of, so don’t expect it to be perfect the first time around. Once you’ve made it a few times you’ll get a feel for the consistency you need to make good bread and you’ll be addicted to the way it makes your house smell.
The recipe does look so easy. Thank you. I’ve been timid to use yeast and do all that “rising” etc
Maybe I’ll give this a try.
