When I was 9 years old I received a copy of A Christmas Carol for a Christmas gift exchange. Even at such a young age, I loved to read. I loved curling up in my bed with a flashlight and reading until my eyes could not stay open any longer. I was elated to receive such a gift and began reading it that very night.
Dickens’ words touched my innermost being. Probably because even though I was only 9, I was a bit of a Scrooge.
I was very excited when I received the opportunity to review Disney’s new 3-D version of A Christmas Carol starring Jim Carrey. I couldn’t wait to watch my longtime favorite come to life again. And come to life it did…
It is certainly no bah, humbug! It is an excellent remake of the classic Dicken’s tale. I am not a big fan of most of Carrey’s films but he does an amazing job in this movie. Along with the role of Scrooge, which ranges from age 7 through 65, he also plays all three of the Christmas spirits. He plays such an excellent part that I imagine he is exactly the character Dickens had in mind when penning the novel.
There are several parts of the movie that are a bit frightening and therefore I wouldn’t feel comfortable taking young children. It does however, present an excellent opportunity to discuss the importance of charity with older children.
No matter how many times I’ve read (or watched) this story, I am always so inspired by watching Scrooge’s transformation from a miserable old miser to a changed man who is compassionate and generous. The movie captures all of this and makes you feel as if you are a part of their world. You will find yourself gripping your chair in fright at certain points and laughing out loud during others. It is an excellent combination of entertainment elements and a must-see for this holiday season!
In the spirit of Christmas, we will be giving away a special edition copy of A Christmas Carol. The book contains the original Charles Dickens classic story along with Christian insights and discussion questions for groups and families.

how fab! i took my kids to see it this past weekend and they loved it! the best part of the film is that afterwards, we talked to our kids about being kind, living a good life and how important that is no matter what time of year it is. I told them that we only get one life so it’s important to make it good for us and others. It’s not like video games where you get life after life after life! LOL! Such a great tale….i would so love to read the book!
I love this story. I remember going to see it performed at a theater with my class when I was in 4th grade. It made such an impact on me!! I still watch it every single year. I can’t wait to see it this year.
My favorite part is the Cratchetts dinner. It makes me teary. I love that they really make the most of what they have and enjoy each other.
I love the book and some of the older movies that have been done with the story. It always has a way of putting me in the feel of Christmas and I am eager to see the new movie…thanks for this opportunity!
I love the Ghost of Christmas Present
I love when Scrooge realizes in the end the power of giving to others and how his life is made better by inviting people into his life and helping them.
I like how tiny Tim changes his mind…
Do you know, I’ve never actually read this? One of my favorite movie versions is the Muppets =) and then the newer one with Patrick Stewart. I’m always touched by how he lost his first love, and how he turns his life around. It’s never too late!
I love this story too. my favorite part is when we get a glimpse into scrooge’s past, and why he turned into such a horrible person.
i will say i love the patrick stewart version too! i cannot stand jim carrey though, but want to see this one – but my kids are too little to go… we’re taking them to a local play though that i am thinking won’t be as intense.
I love how perspective is really all Scrooge needs. He just needs some real perspective on what is actually happening at the Cratchett home and some long term & past perspective on what made him who he is and where it’s going to take him if he doesn’t change something. That’s all he needed to really have a change of heart.
Shawnee and Bridget–
Yes, my all-time favorite is the Hallmark version with Patrick Stewart too. That one is very well done and is not too scary for my little guys either.
Disney’s version was really cool because of the 3D but I don’t think we’ll ever own a copy to watch at home.
For those of you who have not read the book–
WHAT ARE YOU WAITING FOR??
i love that there is complexity. scrooge had a pretty hard life himself so it is easier to understand how he turned out the way he did. but that isn’t any excuse for him. he is still encouraged to change. just as are we all. life is better for everyone when you don’t let your past dictate your present. i hope my kids will grasp that concept instead of focusing on what a “mean mommy” i am!
What I love is the feeling the reader or the movie goer comes away with. One sees the goodness and kindness in people. One learns that a little kindness goes a long way and is returned repeatedly.

I love the innocence and heart of Tiny Tim
I love the happy ending. There’s nothing better than the generosity Scrooge displays!
