Friday April 2 is the International Day for Children’s Books. To celebrate, here is a list of some of the best picture books for children – both classic and contemporary. The classics were definitely treasured favorites from my childhood, and some of these contemporary choices get a lot of love in my home as well.
Classics
Madeline by Ludwig Bemelmans
Corduroy by Don Freeman
The Little Engine That Could by Watty Piper
Tikki Tikki Tembo by Arlene Mosel
Harold and the Purple Crayon by Crockett Johnson
New Favorites
Spoon by Amy Krouse Rosenthal
The Pigeon Finds a Hot Dog! by Mo Willems
Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs by Judi Barrett
If You Give a Mouse a Cookie by Laura Numeroff
Bear Wants More by Karma Wilson
More children’s book favorites can be found in our Kids Channel, International Children’s Book Day.

We’ll have to check out Spoon and Bear Wants More.
I host a weekly meme called Feed Me Books Friday on my blog where moms share some of their favorite children’s books.
I have found so many great books this way and ordered Harold and the Purple Crayon and fell in love with Mo Willems books.
Thank you for posting this list: I would need to read many of them that I have not had the chance to read with my son but I absolutely love “Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs”. My son when he was 4, had a hard time with it but now that he is 5 it is a joy to read!
He also was in love with “Where the Wild Things are” and “the Very Hungry Caterpillar” for months!
It is amazing that at different ages and different phases children gravitate toward a book and for a long time that’s what they want to read. I still remember reading “The little Black Fish” (old Persian Children’s book) as a child and from time to time I revisit the same book.
It was because of that passion for turning pages and seeing my son bubble with energy when it was time to read that I wrote and illustrated my own book inspired by him!
