Daniel Kirk’s Honk Honk! Beep Beep! (Hyperion Books) is a bedtime picture book which celebrates the glory of dawn.
With colorful illustrations and clever rhyme, Kirk tells the story of a father and son adventuring over hills and mountains, through construction zones, and past drivers in distress (don’t worry – they stop to provide help!) to get to the breathtaking scene at the start of a new day.
My 3yo son asks for this story frequently, and he loves picking out new details in the pictures each time we read. He also knows by now when to emphatically declare “Honk Honk! Beep Beep!” during the story. I love the tender exchanges between the father and son, and the proposed importance of spending quality family time together. I also enjoy how as the story unravels, the landscape comes into focus, and you find the true imaginative qualities of this book.
Daniel Kirk has written and illustrated numerous books for children, including Library Mouse, Chugga-Chugga Cho- Choo, and How the Wind Plays.
