With blogging becoming more and more popular, it’s important to write in a way that will keep your readers waiting anxiously for your next post, and here are five ways you can help make your blog one people can’t wait to read.
Get personal
1. Don’t be afraid to get personal! Readers like to feel as though they are a part of something special, like you are telling them a secret. The more you reveal about yourself the more likely readers are to feel connected to you, and connections equal return visits to your blog. They also are more likely to invest in and care about what you are saying when they feel as though they know you on a personal level. Admitting your own joys, doubts, or insecurities will help your readers to see the ‘person’ behind your words. However, be warned: there can be a fine line between a ‘good share’ and an ‘overshare’, so think twice before revealing too much.
Use your photos
2. Use pictures to help tell your story. I confess: sometimes when there are no photos, I simply don’t read. Pictures can be a valuable tool when dishing your dirt or expressing your thoughts; they can fill in the cracks left between your words and can captivate your readers. They can also be used to help longer posts appear as shorter parts rather than one big, sometimes intimidating, piece of information.
Be yourself
3. Be yourself. Whether you are generally a witty or serious person, let that shine through in your writing. If you try to sound like someone whom you are not, it will show. Your readers will feel the lack of sincerity in your writing and will be less likely to return for a second dose of YOU.
Dish the details
4. If you want your readers to truly connect to what you are saying, you need to be specific. Including details will help the reader to see the same picture in her mind that you see in yours. Try relying on your senses when trying to include details. How does something smell or sound? What does it feel like when you touch it? How would you describe it to someone who have never seen anything like that before? Is it something that can be tasted? If so, is it bitter or sweet, spicy or sour? Being specific will not only help you to express yourself more clearly, but it will also connect your reader to you and to your topic.
Post with a purpose
5. It’s your blog, and therefore you can post as many entries as you so choose. With this being said, it is important to remember that each post needs a purpose. Your daughter’s soccer game, newest book club read, and favorite new kitchen product each warrant a separate post. When you try to cover too much information at one time, readers can miss your overall message and become bored. You want to leave them wanting more, not lost in a sea of an overload of information.
By following these few simple steps, you are bound to see your blog (and writing) improve. Happy blogging!
