Your local library can be a fun and resourceful place for young children. To encourage reading and show them what a wonderful world reading can bring to them, introduce them to the library. Here is some advice on how you can show your toddler what a exciting place the library can be.
No Distractions
It would be wise to take a small children to the library when the activities there are minimal. This will help them concentrate and not be too overwhelming for them. They will be able to concentrate better and enjoy their time spent there. Talk to the librarian to see when the best time might be. Less activity also means more time for the librarian to spend with your children and show them around. This personal attention will be important for your children’s confidence level when approaching the librarian with any needs that they may have.
Etiquette
There are always “rules” on how to behave no matter where we go. The library is no exception. Though the library is not the silent place it used to be, loud noises are still not tolerated. Teaching your child that the “inside voice” is still important will help them to enjoy the experience. Explain to them how others are trying to go on their own reading journeys and noise would not make the trip so pleasant.
A Place of Their Own
In most libraries, children have their own place at the library. Knowing that makes it all the more exciting for a toddler. Take them to their area and show them around. Show them where playing is acceptable and where reading should be done. Take them to their section and pull interesting books off the shelf. When you are done with the books, show them how they can carefully put them back as this helps the librarian in keeping the library neat.
Meet the Librarian
The librarian can be your child’s best reading friend. They know so much and help with almost anything. Introduce your child to the librarian and discuss how they can help. This is very important when it comes to getting acquainted with the library.
Being able to help themselves to good books and feel comfortable in the library is important for a child’s reading motivation. Use the library as a tool to help your child get excited about reading.

My feeling is it’s never too early for the library. I like your advice to introduce toddlers to the library when the librarian has time to show them around the children’s department. Once they’ve gotten acquainted with the library, it’s fun to attend storytimes and other special events, too. Our library system in Nashville has phenomenal offerings for kids, and between checking out books and videos and everything else, my kids get super pumped about going to the library.
