E! Network host/producer/reality star, Giuliana “G” Rancic, announced that she will undergo a double mastectomy after a mammogram revealed early stage breast cancer in October. With her husband Bill by her side, the spunky 37-year-old television host made the announcement earlier today on NBC’s Today Show.
After undergoing a double lumpectomy, doctors were unable to remove all the cancer from one breast. Faced with the difficult decision of opting for another lumpectomy or to undergo a more radical procedure, the couple decided on a double mastectomy after consulting with many experts and women who have also faced breast cancer.
The couple has also been very public about their struggles with infertility and said part of their difficult decision stems from their desire to have children. Giuliana told Today Show’s Ann Curry that another lumpectomy, radiation and anti-estrogen therapy would delay the couple from having children for several years. She said while her decision may not be the right choice for others, having the double mastectomy is the right choice for her.
“For me, it was very important to just get the cancer out. That’s what I wanted to do. Just get it out. With the double mastectomy, I have less than a 1 percent chance of getting it back.”
The television host also said the loving support from her husband has played an essential role in her personal and emotional well-being since her diagnosis. She said one of her first concerns when considering a mastectomy was what she would look like?
“I just need you around for the next 50 years, kid. I don’t care what you look like, I don’t care about the physical portion of this. I just need you around for the next 50 years. So, let’s just get you healthy,” Bill told her.
She also said while she is scared of the unknown and the pain, she considers scars beautiful because they tell a story. Surgery and immediate breast reconstruction is planned for next week.
Bill Rancic was the first winner of NBC’s “The Apprentice” television show. Giuliana co-hosts E! News and Fashion Police. Together, the couple also stars in the E! reality series, Giuliana and Bill.
The beautiful television host has been overwhelmed with support and prayers from fans and well-wishers since she announced her diagnosis six weeks ago. A frequent Twitter user with over 2 million followers, she tweeted:
“Thank u all!…..Thank u for the outpouring of prayers.”
Giuliana’s story of survival and grace serves as an important reminder of the importance of regular mammograms and self-screening despite the strides in breast cancer research. Fans, celebrity friends and well-wishers are leaving words of encouragement on social media sites. Positive thoughts and prayers for a speedy and full recovery, G! Your courage and positivity is an inspiration to all!
