These were created as a thank you gift but I love them so much I am going to make more for gifts, some for Modern Gingham to sell and a tutorial for Bee Wise Patterns. It is a great use of small doilies for a vintage yet modern interpretation of the cloth napkin. We only use cloth napkins and when they get too stained, I make more.
Step One: Cut 18″ by 18″ squares from heavy cotton. Hem the edges by rolling them twice and sewing the hem in place. For the napkins above, I wanted a frayed look, so I simply zigzagged the edges.
Step Two: Cut small round or square doilies into fourths. A machine doily will not fray but the hand crocheted ones will, therefore I cut them using a roller blade and then handled them carefully.
Step Three: If you want an embellishment choose buttons, scrap fabric pieces or as I did, cute fruit fabric that I ironed to Heat & Bond and then cut out the fruit.
Step Four: Lay the napkin fabric out flat, pin a 1/4 of a doily onto the corner of the napkin, (Make sure you choose the same corner on each napkin, so they fold the same) and then place your embellishment on top of the doily. Zigzag the doily to the edge of the napkin and along the curve, then sew on your embellishment with any stitch you choose.
