As I was digging through my Great Grandmother’s button tin I found the sweetest little fabric covered button. It was not like the modern ones where you buy the metal shanks and press them together with the items provided in the kit. It was simpler and inspired me to write this tutorial.
Step One: Select the plain buttons that you want to cover. Use items like thread spools, small tin lids, or coins to draw circles on the fabric you choose. Cut your circles and sew a baste stitch around the outer edge of your fabric.
Step Two: Lay your button in the center of the circle and cinch the fabric around the button. Tie it off well and trim the thread – not too short so it does not come untied. Use Fray Check or a tiny bit of watered down white glue to keep the raw edges from fraying. Let this dry completely before sewing the buttons onto anything.
Voilà… Perfectly sweet covered buttons!
