If you are like me you probably can’t wait for Fall for a lot of reasons. Where I live, we are swarmed with mosquitoes for at least 5 months of the year. The change of the seasons brings not only cooler weather, but a very welcome chance to enjoy the outdoors worry free!
I am really excited this year because my toddler is at a very inquisitive age. It’s the perfect time for a nature walk! He loves pine cones and leaves and whenever the wind blows he stands completely still taking it all in. And as an added bonus, whatever items we collect make excellent art projects!
This year, I plan to make glitter pine cones, let my son finger paint some fall leaves and my personal favorite, Acorn wreaths! Here is a simple plan for an acorn wreath using kid friendly (and fun!) supplies.
-
Collect your acorns!
We have an Oak Tree in our yard so this is the easy part. Get more for a large, full wreath. The size is up to you.
-
Construct a Wreath Base
I suggest using cardboard or some other sturdy medium to support the weight of the acorns. And it will retain its shape so you can hang it!
-
Decorate your acorns!
This part is so much fun but can be very messy. Put some white glue in a bowl and Dip the acorn in the glue. Follow by dipping it in a bowl of glitter. Using different fall colors is a fun way to add variety! Let your kids get their hands messy and dip away! Just make sure they don’t try to eat it!
-
Put it all Together
Once your acorns are all glittery you can attach them to the wreath base. Hot glue works best for this so depending on the age of your children, this part might be a job for mom. The kids can still decide where to place the acorns. Do as many rows around the wreath base as you can and if you have enough acorns, you can even add a second layer on top of the first.
And that’s it! It’s a great craft and once you are finished, you will have a head start on decorating for Fall!
Have you made an acorn wreath? Let’s see it!
