Homemade coasters add an unexpected pop of excitement to a room. They’re inexpensive, easy to create, and make great customized gifts!

This post at Curbly inspired me to make my first coasters last year. Over time, I adapted the process and now have several sets that match the décor of different rooms in my house. Using scrapbook paper allows for endless color and pattern choices! When choosing paper, be aware that the polyurethane coating will slightly deepen the colors.
DIY Coaster Materials:
- Square ceramic tiles (available at most hardware stores for around 10 cents each)
- Mod Podge
- Clear semi-gloss or high-gloss polyurethane
- Assorted scrapbook paper
- One or two small paintbrushes
- Extra-small round adhesive furniture protectors
DIY Coaster Instructions:
1. Cut scrapbook paper to fit the tiles. Use the tile itself as a guide, adding some extra space around the edges.
2. Center a square of paper over a tile. Fold the excess over the sides, making sure that all sides of the tile are covered. Trim or adjust as needed. I recommend snipping a tiny square from each corner (where the edges of the paper overlap) to eliminate excess paper at the corners. Once you’re comfortable with the fit, remove the paper from the tile.

3. Put a protective covering over your work surface (old catalogs or newspapers work fine). Brush a layer of Mod Podge onto all sides of the tile, and place the paper on top. The sides may require a little extra Mod Podge, since the paper tends to pop up – folding strong creases during step 2 should help with this. Press firmly, and gently smooth out any wrinkles. Allow to dry for at least one hour.

4. If you don’t want paint fumes in your house, you may want to take your project outside or to the garage at this point! Apply a coat of polyurethane over all sides of each tile. Repeat for one to three more coats, depending on your preference. Allow to dry properly between coats.

5. Once the coated tiles are completely dry, apply adhesive felt circles to the bottom corners of each one, to protect furniture.
6. Enjoy your new, coordinated coasters (and the compliments you’ll get from visitors)!

Very creative. I bet I could probably even use this as a craft for kids at church. Thanks for sharing!
Yay! I remember you talking about these before but I didn’t realize you had continued to make them and refine the process. They’re cute and a good gift idea, like you say.
I have a dumb question–when you say to put the Mod Podge and polyurethane on all sides of the coaster–does that mean the back, too? If so, how do you keep it from sticking on the magazines or whatever? I might be misreading, though.
That was amazing! I love it! I think I’ll do this in 2011 to fulfill my New Year’s resolution of becoming more crafty! =)
Jessica, you’re right – don’t put anything on the back of the coaster except the felt pads! Thanks for clarifying!
I absolutely love this craft! I always am intimidated by DIY projects, but this looks so EASY and the outcome is beautiful!
Excellent! These are so beautiful!
So, I’m totally thinking of doing this at some point! It looks like something I could handle!!
Cool Brenda,
I have done something similar before. Also if you are feeling a little adventurous you can cut you paper out in shapes and just mod-podge the back of the paper so you have a relatively plain tile with patterns on it, depending on what you decor and style desires.
Oh and you can get some cool little silicon feet at the hardware store that are the same size as the felt dots but have a little more endurance and give.
Very cool though!!!
Very cute! These would be such cute hostess gifts wrapped up with a little raffia and a gift tag!
What a great idea! I love crafts and this looks like an easy project. I think I’ll make these for my friends.
Excellent! These are so beautiful!
This is one of my favorite Mod Podge crafts! Love your polka dots. Happy Holidays!
Hi Brenda!
These are the coolest! Great way to use up some extra scrapbook paper! And very customizable when giving them as gifts.
Fun! I am totally going to make some of these!
