For many years, I looked longingly at handmade knitted items, and wish I could do them too. However, after a particularly horrific attempt at learning to crochet, I decided to let go of the dream of having my kids outfitted in matching hats that they could tell people, “My Mom made this for me.” Maybe you’ve had similar knitting dreams dashed, and have long since given up.
Imagine my delight when I finally bought a set of the Knifty Knitter knitting looms, and approximately an hour after I sat down with one of the looms, I had a sweet pink and gray knitted hat for my daughter. Not only was I delighted, but my daughter was ecstatic too. Soon, I had requests from all of my children for items.
What Can Be Made
Although one of the fastest (and easiest) things to make with the Knifty Knitter looms are hats, it is astonishing how many projects can be made on the looms. Patterns and directions are readily available for a variety of hats, scarves, blankets, sweaters, and bags, among other projects. There are a variety of books available full of projects for knitting looms, such as Loom Knitting Primer. (I was able to borrow some books with loom knitting patterns/directions from my local library as well.)
Pay it Forward
When I first bought the loom set, since hats are so easy to make, I was afraid that I might have knitted hats sitting all over my house. Luckily, I figured out a way to have fun making knitted items and to bless others. After I got some hat making for my kids and friends out of my system, I spent some time working on knitted hats last year to donate to a church that has a program that distributes hats and gloves to the homeless in their community.
I never would have imagined that this decidedly non-knitter would be making projects to keep others warm. I hope that the hats were a blessing to those who received them, because they were definitely a blessing to me to make.
