One of the most popular symbols associated with St. Patrick’s Day is the shamrock, so here’s a little information about the shamrock along with a fun page of printables!
The Shamrock
The shamrock is a three leafed old white clover. It was once used for medicinal purposes and was a popular motif during the Victorian era. It is officially classed as the ‘Badge of Ireland’ and used as an emblem for sports teams. It is said Saint Patrick used it to help explain the Holy Trinity.
The Druids (pre – Christian priests in Celt times, ancient Gaul, Britain and Ireland) in Ireland looked at the shamrock as being sacred, because the leaves formed a triad – three being a mystical number in the Celtic religion.
The Four Leaf Clover
The four leaf clover comes from the white clover plant, but only occasionally. It is said to be extremely lucky because of its rarity and having one (in the Middle Ages) gave the holder powers to be able to see fairies and sprites.
