The tagline for the movie gives us a taste for not only the storyline but the inspired cinematography. Color abounds where love resides. From the appearance of rainbows to the clothes and accouterments of main character Maire, to the beautiful Corrie Islands, color is it’s own character in this poignant tale of love and loss and life.
A Shine of Rainbows is the story of Maire (Connie Nielsen), a loving, warm and joyful woman, Tomas (John Bell), the young boy she adopts and whisks off to a new home on a remote Corrie Island off the coast of Ireland, and Alec (Aidan Quinn), her reticent husband who can’t hide his lack of enthusiasm for timid Tomas. Undeterred, Maire shares the joys of her island home and teaches Tomas that everything you need is inside of you-if you really look.
In time, Tomas too falls in love with his home, but when tragedy strikes, he is faced with his greatest challenge yet for he’ll lose everything unless he can find, and share, the unique gifts inside of him. A Shine of Rainbows is a story about the transformational power of love, discovering ourselves, and realizing that rainbows are all around us-and within us too.
This movie is not only a delight for your senses but a well thought out and well acted story. Veteran actors Connie Nielsen (Maire) and Aidan Quinn (Alec) bring their vast talents and experiences while newcomer, John Bell (Tomas), exquisitely pairs naivete with strength of character. You’ll find yourself smiling, laughing and crying as this timeless tale speaks to your heart.
This family friendly film was released in Canada on April 9th and has a limited release in the U.S. It is now playing in Chicago and will open on April 30th in Nashville, Indianapolis and Orange County. Look for A Shine of Rainbows in your theater.
