It’s country week y’all which usually spells disaster for a lot of contestants. I am not a country fan per se although some of my favorite karaoke songs to sing are country so go figure. That is neither here nor there so let’s get on to the performances.
Michael Sarver, Sun Comes Up: This song is ballsy. Holy lots of words to remember Batman. I thought he did a fantastic job. I could see him doing country after that performance. And that was the most comfortable I have ever seen him on stage. The judges weren’t thrilled, but I agree with Michael, country isn’t about singing the best, it is about having fun.
Allison Iraheta, Blame It On Your Heart: I am starting to think this girl can sing anything. And I might have to say this every week, but she is sixteen!! Somebody needs to snatch this girl up. The judges continue to love her.
Kris Allen, To Make You Feel My Love: I love this song so much. I thought he did a real solid job. He was vulnerable and very connected to the song. I loved the falsetto note at the end. Just a sweet performance. The judges really liked it. Simon even used the l-word. His mama looked so proud.
Lil Rounds, Independence Day: I am nervous for her. I don’t see her doing country. I thought she struggled and had a lot pitch problems. It was almost painful to listen to. The judges didn’t love it, except Paula who spoke nonsense. They all encouraged her to stick to R&B flavored songs. I couldn’t agree more.
Adam Lambert, Ring of Fire: Ok, the interaction between Randy Travis and Adam was worth the price of admission. I did not like the beginning of the song. Cause it is hard to mess with a Johnny Cash song. But it grew on me and sounded very current. It was incredibly risky, but I think he pulled it off. The judges were mixed in their reaction. Simon hated it, Paula and Randy loved it, Kara was confused. I have a feeling that encompasses America’s reaction too.
Scott McIntyre, Wild Angels: I found myself bored through this performance. And the song seemed horribly outdated. The judges all seemed to say that he was playing it a bit too safe and needed to up his game a bit. Simon felt really strongly he is picking bad songs. He is enough of a fan favorite, I think he is safe.
Alexis Grace, Jolene: Very weird, but I swear she looked exactly like a small breasted version of Dolly Parton tonight. I didn’t love the beginning of this song, but she totally came into it. In the end, I really enjoyed that performance. The judges didn’t seem to like it much and actually criticized her for trying to do something different. But they have told half the other contestants to stop doing the same thing so I don’t know how you win on that front.
Danny Goeke, Jesus Take The Wheel: This song started very weak and I started to get very nervous. But then Danny came alive and we got to hear the Danny we know and love. And that will, thankfully, be what people remember. The judges were split down the middle, with half agreeing with me that the front end was weak. Let’s just assume they are the 2 that know what they are talking about.
Anoop Desai, Always On My Mind: I have not been a big fan of this guy, but tonight I think he did spectacular. I didn’t realize he was such a ballad singer and had such range. Fantastic performance. The judges loved him and Simon even apologized for telling him last week that he didn’t deserve to be here.
Megan Joy, I Go Walking After Midnight: Her voice is out of a completely different era. It is so different from anyone else in this competition. I think that was a really cool version of that song and I could totally hear that in a piano bar. Then we totally find out that she has the flu and was in the hospital today. Amazing. The judges loved her.
Matt Giraud, So Small: This guy can do no wrong as far as I am concerned. Fantastic performance. The judges loved him. Simon compared his to Michael Bubble. He is definitely one to watch. Don’t know what else to say.
Overall, I thought the night went off much better than country week in year’s past. This group is hard to criticize. They are a talented bunch.

I’ll be downloading Kris Allen’s version of “To Make You Feel My Love” – not only was it beautiful, but that’s my hubby and my “song”… and so it was all swoony and melty. Siiiigh.
Wasn’t broken hearted at all to see Alexis go home last night, btw… I won’t miss her.
